Augnito is a leading voice recognition software built with the goal to improve the quality of clinical documentation while allowing doctors to be more efficient by the use of cutting edge technology. Pulse 2.0 interviewed Augnito co-founder and CEO Rustom Lawyer to learn more about the company.
Rustom Lawyer’s Background
Could you tell us more about your background? Lawyer said:
“I have always been passionate about healthcare technology, a journey that began when I co-founded Scribetech in the UK at the age of 19. Scribetech became a pioneer in clinical transcription services for the National Health Service (NHS), laying the groundwork for what would eventually become Augnito. With over two decades of experience in healthcare, I co-founded Augnito in 2020 with Shiraz Austin. Our shared vision is to transform healthcare technology by addressing the critical need for efficient, accurate clinical documentation and interoperable systems.
Formation Of The Company
How did the idea for Augnito come together and what are your primary
responsibilities? Lawyer shared:
“The idea for Augnito emerged from a clear pain point in the healthcare industry: the excessive time clinicians spend on documentation. Recognizing this, we developed cloud-based voice recognition software to streamline clinical workflows. As Co-Founder and CEO, my primary responsibilities include steering the company’s strategic direction, fostering innovation, and ensuring that our solutions align with the needs of healthcare professionals worldwide.”
Favorite Memory
What is your favorite memory of working for Augnito thus far? Lawyer reflected:
“I’d have to say that this is dynamic and happens almost every week at Augnito – witnessing the profound impact of our technology on clinicians’ daily routines. Seeing doctors save hours each day and use that time to enhance patient care is incredibly rewarding. It reaffirms our mission and motivates us to continue innovating.”
Core Products
What are Augnito’s core products and features? Lawyer explained:
“Let me walk you through our comprehensive suite of solutions at Augnito. As we work towards our vision of being The Optimal AI Assistant for Healthcare, we’ve developed two main enterprise-grade clinical documentation solutions that I’m particularly proud of.
Augnito Spectra:
Spectra is our best-in-class voice-driven clinical documentation solution. What makes it special is that it’s four times faster than typing and achieves 99% accuracy right out of the box – no voice training required. We’ve designed it to support over 55 clinical specialties, from General Medicine to Oncology and Radiology.
One of the features that clinicians have enjoyed most is our dynamic templates system. Clinicians can upload predefined templates for various clinical note types, and control everything through voice commands. We’ve also included personalization features like custom vocabularies and macros, which save our users significant time in their daily workflows.
The ROI numbers speak for themselves – we’ve seen organizations achieve
21 times return on their investment in just six months. Plus, Spectra
integrates seamlessly with any RIS/LIS/HIS/EMR system, including major platforms like Epic and Cerner.
Augnito Omni:
Our second major offering is Omni, our comprehensive technology suite that leverages Ambient Clinical Intelligence, Generative AI, and other associated technologies. Through this versatile product basket, we envision offering a range of powerful tools designed to streamline clinical workflows and enhance patient care.
This is where we’re really pushing the boundaries of what’s possible in clinical documentation particularly. Omni AI Scribe, for example, can capture and transcribe clinical conversations in over 37 languages in real-time, which is transforming how doctors interact with their patients.
What I find particularly impressive about Omni is its impact on clinician productivity. We’re seeing doctors save an average of 2+ hours per day, with a 60% reduction in documentation time. This is crucial given the burnout challenges facing healthcare professionals today.
Omni also includes sophisticated features like Clinical Documentation Integrity (CDI) and automatic code retrieval for ICD 10, SNOMED, or SBS codes. These features aren’t just about convenience – they’re helping reduce claim denials and improve billing accuracy, which directly impacts our clients’ bottom line.
What really sets both these solutions apart is their flexibility in deployment. Whether our clients prefer cloud-based SaaS or on-premises installation, we ensure industry-standard compliance and data localization. We’ve also made integration extremely straightforward through our APIs and SDKs, offering both low-code and no-code options.
The real value, though, comes from how these solutions are transforming healthcare delivery. By automating documentation and improving accuracy, we’re giving clinicians more time to focus on what matters most – patient care. This is what drives us at Augnito – creating technology that makes healthcare more efficient, accurate, and human-centered.”
Challenges Faced
Have you faced any challenges in your work sector recently? Lawyer acknowledged:
“One significant challenge has been ensuring data interoperability across various healthcare systems. We addressed this by developing solutions that integrate easily with existing platforms through APIs and SDKs. Additionally, gaining trust from healthcare professionals was crucial. We focused on creating user-friendly interfaces and providing comprehensive support to facilitate seamless adoption. We call this our human-centric design philosophy – which permeates into everything from the product to our detail-oriented customer success approach, whereby we provide personalized assistance to help clinicians and enterprises adopt and integrate the technology without any changes to their existing workflow – turning them into advocates for Augnito worldwide.”
Evolution Of The Company’s Technology
How has Augnito’s technology evolved since its launch? Lawyer noted:
“Since launching, Augnito’s technology has evolved significantly. We have incorporated advanced AI capabilities such as Machine Learning, Natural Language Processing (NLP), Ambient Clinical Intelligence, Generative AI, and more, to enhance our solutions’ accuracy and efficiency. These innovations allow us to support a wide range of medical specialties and care settings, as well as improve clinician productivity manifold.”
Significant Milestones
What have been some of Augnito’s most significant milestones? Lawyer cited:
“Some of Augnito’s most significant milestones include serving over 500 hospitals and 15,000 clinicians worldwide, achieving a 21-fold return on investment for our client within six months, and integrating our solutions with major platforms like Epic and Cerner.”
“Recently, our robust expansion into the GCC and partnership agreement with Cloud Solutions has been a standout achievement.”
Customer Success Stories
Can you share any specific customer success stories? Lawyer highlighted:
“One notable success story involves Apollo Hospitals, Asia’s largest hospital group, where our solutions led to a 46% increase in overall productivity and allowed physicians to save 44 hours each month. This case study perfectly highlights how our technology enhances
clinical workflows and reduces physician burnout.”
Total Addressable Market
What total addressable market (TAM) size is Augnito pursuing? Lawyer assessed:
“Augnito is pursuing a total addressable market within the global healthcare AI sector projected to reach $188 billion by 2030. This growth underscores the increasing demand for AI-driven solutions in healthcare.”
There is an extract from a brilliant article by a16z that encapsulates our vision as well:
‘When describing the opportunity for tech in healthcare, everyone always talks about how it’s a massive $4 trillion+ industry. But the vast majority of that $4 trillion is services (human labor) spend, not tech spend; and per the earlier point, it’s been very hard for enterprise software companies to penetrate that morass and capture much value in that overall pie (IT budgets are only 3.5% of revenue in healthcare, which is less than half of what it is in the financial services industry).
But now, AI tools are getting good enough (and evolving rapidly enough) that organizations may view them more as ‘AI staff’ than as software products. We’re not just talking about disrupting the market of enterprise software, which is on the order of tens of billions of dollars, but we’re talking about disrupting the market of services, which is on the order of trillions. So in that sense, the scale of opportunity is 1-2 orders of magnitude larger than historical software opportunities, which is reflected in the quantum of capital and valuations going into companies executing this strategy.’”
Differentiation From The Competition
What differentiates Augnito from its competition? Lawyer affirmed:
“What sets Augnito apart from competitors is our commitment to creating technology that enhances rather than replaces human expertise. Our solutions are designed with a focus on user experience, integration flexibility, and maintaining high standards of accuracy and security.
Future Company Goals
What are some of Augnito’s future company goals? Lawyer concluded:
Looking ahead, Augnito aims to expand its global presence further, continue innovating its product offerings, and deepen its partnerships with healthcare institutions worldwide. Our ultimate goal is to empower clinicians with an AI toolkit that automates workflows, ensures high quality and precision in documentation and administration, and complements their expertise with evidence-based suggestions and insights. Whether in the OPD, operating theatre, any specialty department, diagnostic centers or pharmacies – we want to be present and helpful across the entire care continuum.”
