Avatar Robotics has raised $6.5 million in Seed funding to scale its humanoid robotics platform for industrial labor, targeting persistent worker shortages across warehousing, logistics, and manufacturing. The round was led by AlleyCorp, alongside a pre-seed led by defy.vc, with participation from Headline, Henry Ford III, Refashiond, Paul Vogel, Jack Huffard, and Samuel Udotong.
Founded in San Francisco, Avatar Robotics is building what it describes as an “unlimited workforce” by combining humanoid robots, remote human operators, and AI-driven autonomy.
The company’s robots are designed to perform warehouse and manufacturing tasks including picking, packing, kitting, sorting, cycle counting, material movement, rework, and assembly.
Rather than requiring customers to fully redesign facilities or wait for completely autonomous robots to mature, Avatar uses a human-in-the-loop model that allows remote operators to control robots from the beginning.
That approach is intended to give customers usable labor capacity immediately while simultaneously generating real-world operating data that can improve the robots’ autonomous capabilities over time.
Since launching in December 2025, Avatar said its robots have packed, sorted, and helped ship more than 900,000 products in live customer environments.
That work has included deployments for a leading global beauty retailer.
The company has also begun expanding beyond a pilot with a multi-billion-dollar warehouse operator, where its robots are supporting sorting and picking workflows. Additional deployments are underway.
Avatar is targeting a major structural challenge facing industrial businesses: difficulty recruiting and retaining enough workers for repetitive, physically demanding, or difficult-to-staff positions.
Those pressures could intensify as companies reshore more manufacturing operations to the U.S. and consumers continue to expect increasingly fast fulfillment.
Avatar believes a combination of falling robotics costs, high-speed connectivity, remote operations, and advances in artificial intelligence is creating an opportunity to rethink how industrial labor is supplied.
Instead of deploying robots only for narrowly defined automated processes, Avatar wants companies to be able to add robotic labor capacity in a more flexible way.
Remote human operators provide reliability for tasks that current AI systems cannot consistently perform autonomously.
At the same time, every remotely completed task generates robot-control data that can be used to train the company’s AI systems and robotic foundation models.
The long-term goal is to progressively increase autonomy so that individual workers can supervise and control larger fleets of robots rather than operating machines one at a time.
Avatar believes this could eventually allow one warehouse operator to command an entire robotic fleet.
The model also differs from many traditional industrial automation systems, which can require significant upfront integration, specialized equipment, and highly structured workflows.
Avatar describes its system as plug-and-play, allowing robots to begin working with human assistance before the software has learned to autonomously execute every workflow in a particular facility.
That structure could be particularly valuable in environments where tasks change frequently or are too complex to justify conventional fixed automation.
The company plans to use the new funding to increase customer deployments, expand its robot fleet, accelerate development of its autonomy software, and grow its engineering and operations teams.
Avatar’s team includes engineers and operators with experience at Cruise, Apple, Tesla, Intuitive Surgical, and Unity, along with research backgrounds from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology.
Founder and CEO Colin Webb is an MIT graduate who has previously worked on autonomous technologies ranging from AI-powered drones to self-driving vehicles.
Webb previously co-founded an AI startup with Nenye Anagbogu that was later acquired. Anagbogu has reunited with Webb at Avatar Robotics, where the founding team also includes Hamid Farzaneh.
Over the longer term, Avatar envisions deploying millions of robots across warehouses, factories, mines, farms, and infrastructure projects.
The company ultimately wants businesses of different sizes to be able to access industrial labor on demand while allowing human workers to remotely operate physical systems from safer and more comfortable environments.
If successful, Avatar’s approach could create a hybrid labor model in which people provide intelligence and oversight remotely while robots perform the physical work on-site, with increasing portions of that work gradually shifting to autonomous AI systems.
