BabyDoge has acquired LimeWire, giving the Web3 ecosystem control of one of the internet’s most recognizable file-sharing brands as LimeWire prepares to shift its product strategy toward creator ownership, decentralized storage and AI.

Financial terms of the transaction were not disclosed.

LimeWire’s current platform was rebuilt and relaunched in 2022 by brothers Julian and Paul Zehetmayr, who spent approximately five years developing its technology infrastructure.

The modern LimeWire has no affiliation with the original Lime Wire LLC or Lime Group LLC that operated the well-known file-sharing service of the 2000s.

According to the companies, the rebuilt platform’s infrastructure is used by approximately 8 million people each month.

Leadership will now transition to Abel Czupor and BabyDoge.

Under the new ownership, LimeWire plans to position itself around creator control of content and data, decentralized file storage and AI-powered creative workflows.

The $LMWR cryptocurrency will become the native utility token across LimeWire, including for services such as decentralized storage and access to AI tools.

BabyDoge brings a community of more than 3 million users to the transaction. The broader project says more than 5 million people have participated in its ecosystem since 2021.

BabyDoge also said it has contributed more than $1.5 million to animal shelters and rescue organizations.

LimeWire expects to release an updated product roadmap in the coming weeks.
