Backpack Exchange announced the appointment of Nathan Smith as Chief Operating Officer, reinforcing its leadership structure as the company accelerates global expansion of its regulated, on-chain financial platform.
Smith, a former engineering leader at Coinbase, will oversee company-wide operations, cross-functional execution, and organizational scaling. His background includes leading blockchain infrastructure initiatives, including the integration of Solana and the development of systems that enabled multi-chain growth beyond Ethereum.
At Backpack, Smith has already played a key role in building and scaling the company’s exchange and wallet infrastructure, contributing across trading, custody, and on-chain services. In his new role as COO, he will focus on operational processes, leadership coordination, and execution frameworks to support continued expansion into new markets and product categories.
The appointment is part of a broader effort by Backpack to formalize its executive leadership team. It follows the recent addition of Mark Wetjen, former Commissioner and Acting Chairman of the U.S. Commodity Futures Trading Commission, as President of Backpack US.
Backpack Exchange operates as a fully regulated global cryptocurrency exchange, serving users in more than 150 countries and regions and reporting over $380 billion in trading volume. Its ecosystem includes Backpack Wallet, Backpack Exchange, and Mad Lads, a leading NFT community within the Solana ecosystem.
