Barclays Investment Bank has named Omar Faruqui as Global Chairman of Investment Banking, bringing the veteran banker back to Barclays in a senior leadership role based in London.
In his new position, Faruqui will focus on deepening client relationships globally, providing strategic insight and supporting the continued development of Barclays’ investment banking franchise.
A significant part of his mandate will involve strengthening the bank’s UK mergers and acquisitions capabilities and supporting further growth across its M&A businesses.
Faruqui returns to Barclays after serving as Director General of the UK Takeover Panel, experience the bank expects him to leverage as it advises clients on complex transactions and expands its position in its home market.
The Takeover Panel plays a central role in the framework governing takeovers and other transactions involving UK public companies, giving Faruqui significant experience with the regulatory and strategic considerations surrounding major M&A activity.
Barclays said his appointment is intended to build on the momentum of its investment banking business while enhancing the strategic advice it provides to corporate and financial sponsor clients.
As Global Chairman of Investment Banking, Faruqui will work across Barclays’ international client network rather than focusing solely on the UK.
At the same time, his experience in the British M&A market is expected to be particularly important as Barclays continues investing in its domestic advisory franchise.
The appointment combines Faruqui’s previous experience at Barclays with the perspective gained from his leadership role at the UK Takeover Panel, positioning him to advise senior corporate clients as they evaluate acquisitions, disposals and other strategic transactions.
Barclays described the move as part of its effort to deepen global client relationships, strengthen UK M&A capabilities and continue growing its M&A franchises.
