Bay Collective has agreed to acquire a majority stake in Sunderland AFC Women, marking a significant step in the evolution of the historic club and the continued expansion of Bay Collective’s global women’s football platform.
The transaction will position Sunderland Women as the second club within Bay Collective’s multi-club ownership model, joining Bay FC of the National Women’s Soccer League. The investment will strengthen on-pitch performance and improve infrastructure, operations, and long-term sustainability.
Led by Kay Cossington, Chief Executive Officer of Bay Collective and Head of Global Women’s Football at Sixth Street, the group will implement an athlete-first model focused on player development, training environments, and operational excellence. The partnership also includes plans to invest in facilities, such as the Academy of Light, and to improve the matchday experience for fans.
Sunderland AFC will retain a minority stake in the women’s team, ensuring continuity with the club’s identity and heritage while supporting long-term strategic growth. Completion of the transaction remains subject to regulatory approvals.
Founded in 1879, Sunderland AFC has a longstanding legacy in English football, and its women’s academy has produced several prominent international players, reinforcing the club’s role as a key contributor to developing women’s football talent.
The acquisition aligns with broader investment trends in women’s sports, as institutional capital increasingly targets the sector’s growth potential and global fan engagement.
