Binghamton University has formally inaugurated Anne D’Alleva as its eighth president, nearly a year after she assumed leadership of the university in November 2025.

The October 2 ceremony at the Anderson Center Osterhout Theater was held during a series of events marking Binghamton University’s 80th anniversary.

D’Alleva used the inauguration to emphasize the value of higher education and outline her ambition for Binghamton to remain a leading academic institution while expanding its impact in research, education and the surrounding community.

Her priorities include encouraging students to pursue ambitious questions, supporting faculty research and creative work, creating opportunities for staff, deepening alumni involvement and strengthening relationships with community partners.

The inauguration brought together State University of New York Chancellor John B. King Jr., SUNY Board Chair Merryl Tisch, SUNY trustees, senior university leaders, deans and elected officials.

D’Alleva took office in November 2025 and subsequently led development of Forward Together: The Vision for Binghamton University, a five-year strategic plan launched in August 2026.

The strategy focuses on expanding the university’s impact, strengthening partnerships and increasing its leadership across undergraduate research, graduate education, research collaborations and creative initiatives.

Before joining Binghamton, D’Alleva served for three years as provost and executive vice president for academic affairs at the University of Connecticut, becoming the first woman to serve as UConn’s provost.

She previously spent seven years as dean of UConn’s School of Fine Arts.

D’Alleva is an art historian whose own view of higher education was influenced by her family, including her mother, who earned a college degree at a time when only a small percentage of women did so.

King formally inaugurated D’Alleva during the ceremony.
