Bioness Medical Acquires PoNS Neuromodulation System To Expand Neurorehabilitation Platform

Bioness Medical, a provider of advanced rehabilitation technologies, announced it has acquired the PoNS (Portable Neuromodulation Stimulator) System product line, expanding its capabilities into non-invasive central neuromodulation.

The acquisition strengthens Bioness Medical’s position in neurorehabilitation by adding a complementary therapy designed to improve gait and balance in patients with neurological conditions. The PoNS system delivers stimulation through the tongue to activate cranial nerve pathways, promoting neuroplasticity and functional recovery.

For nearly two decades, Bioness Medical has focused on functional electrical stimulation targeting affected limbs to improve mobility following conditions such as stroke, traumatic brain injury, multiple sclerosis, and cerebral palsy. With the addition of PoNS, the company now integrates both peripheral stimulation and central neuromodulation into a unified treatment approach.

The PoNS system has been studied in patients with chronic neurological conditions and has demonstrated improvements in gait and balance when used alongside supervised rehabilitation programs.

The acquisition also enhances Bioness Medical’s research and development capabilities and supports expanded clinical programs, including combined therapy approaches that integrate functional electrical stimulation with neuromodulation.

This marks Bioness Medical’s third acquisition since becoming an independent neurorehabilitation company following its acquisition by Accelmed Partners in December 2024. The company is continuing to grow its platform through strategic acquisitions and internal innovation, targeting the expanding neuromodulation and neurorehabilitation markets.

KEY QUOTE:

“PoNS technology represents a differentiated approach to neuromodulation that complements our core FES platform. Bioness has built deep relationships with rehabilitation providers over decades. With PoNS, we expand beyond peripheral stimulation into central neuromodulation, offering clinicians a non-invasive therapy that engages neural pathways involved in balance and gait. This positions Bioness to deliver more comprehensive, multi-modal rehabilitation solutions to patients.”
