BIOTRONIK Neuro, the neuromodulation division of Berlin-based global medical device company BIOTRONIK, has acquired a portfolio of intellectual property related to spinal cord stimulation (SCS) from Soin Neuroscience, a Dayton, Ohio-based medical device innovator founded by pain management physician Amol Soin, M.D. Financial terms were not disclosed. Soin Neuroscience will continue to operate as an independent company, with the transaction limited to the intellectual property underlying its spinal cord stimulation program.
The acquired patents cover spinal cord stimulation waveform design, adaptive programming, and the application of machine learning and artificial intelligence to neuromodulation therapy. The IP is intended to inform the development of a next-generation SCS program within BIOTRONIK Neuro’s chronic pain portfolio, complementing the company’s existing Prospera SCS System. Co-inventor Dr. Eric Schepis, PhD, contributed to a portion of the patents included in the transaction.
The acquisition follows a research collaboration announced in December 2025 in which Soin Neuroscience and BIOTRONIK Neuro evaluated novel waveforms and personalized SCS tuning approaches on the Prospera platform. That work established the technical and commercial foundation for today’s IP acquisition.
Spinal cord stimulation delivers electrical impulses to the spinal cord to interrupt pain signals before they reach the brain, offering an alternative to opioid-based chronic pain management. The next frontier in the field is adaptive, data-driven therapy — systems that adjust stimulation parameters in real time based on individual patient response rather than applying fixed waveforms. The Soin Neuroscience IP, with its focus on machine learning-driven personalization and adaptive programming, is directly targeted at that opportunity.
