What is Atul Arya’s background? Arya said:
“Before launching Blackstraw in 2018, I held a series of technology director roles with Nielsen and in my last stint I was Global VP of Innovation. Initially in that position, I led an AI and machine learning team that had been created after Nielsen acquired a company that helped retailers optimize their marketing strategies by using computer vision to identify products on retail shelves. That evolved to include responsibility for all AI-related product development, including image recognition and augmented reality applications as well as early chatbots. By the time I left Nielsen, I managed a global team of experts in areas ranging from machine learning and deep learning to data labeling, modeling and software development.”
Formation Of The Company
How did the idea for the company come together? Arya shared:
“My experience at Nielsen led directly to my decision to launch Blackstraw. At the time, the AI landscape had just begun to take shape, and there were few tools or frameworks available to assist teams in developing and deploying AI solutions. IT teams essentially had to reinvent the wheel every time they embarked on an AI project. Nielsen was no exception.”
“If a company the size of Nielsen needed help on its AI journey, I knew that other organizations faced the same challenge. Simplifying the process became my mission as well as my mantra. (That’s why ‘Simplifying AI’ has been Blackstraw’s tagline from day one.) I wanted to help teams rapidly prototype AI projects. I wanted to help solve the AI talent gap by creating tools that could be used by more than the most elite data scientists. And I wanted to provide a means of shrinking implementation timelines from months to weeks.”
“My initial vision involved developing a series of AI models in areas such as computer vision and predictive analytics to automate repetitive tasks. That quickly expanded to a goal of providing an integrated stack of solutions spanning data collection, model building, operationalization and solution deployment. Clients can use all four components as a complete ‘black box’ or on an a la carte basis to accelerate AI projects.”
“Today we combine these building blocks with a global team of hundreds of AI engineering professionals who support customer projects from AI use case evaluation through implementation.”
Favorite Memory
What has been your favorite memory of heading the company so far? Arya reflected:
“Six or seven months after I started Blackstraw, one of my former colleagues became the CEO at a large retail inventory management company. He engaged us for a three- or four-day consulting project, which turned into a multimillion contract. His company had been struggling with scheduling and routing their field force to facilitate data collection, so we built an AI solution that could do that cost-effectively. That translated into more than $20 million in annual savings. Today 16,00 people use the system.”
“In another case, I had a chance meeting with the head of R&D of one of the largest CPG multinational companies and realized they needed image recognition capabilities to understand competitive claims from product packaging. While we had never worked with that specific use case, our extensive computer vision experience enabled us to roll out a solution in 90 days. The solution is now embedded in their core offering.”
Core Products
What are the company’s core products and features? Arya explained:
“Blackstraw is an AI consulting and implementation firm. We specialize in fast-tracking AI adoption in enterprises, combining accelerators around data acquisition, data engineering and model training frameworks with strategy consulting and customization services to enable rapid development of AI solutions tailored to specific client requirements. The complete list is exhaustive but examples include accelerators for data extraction from virtually any source (websites, documents, emails, purchase receipts, images, maps, social media, promotional flyers, time cards, etc,) and data labeling (including text, image and video). We also offer data engineering accelerators that allow for automated data ingestion, low code framework to develop predictive analytics use cases, incubating AI COEs, prototyping and production grade model building and deployment, and helping enterprises launch chat interfaces customized to their own data and needs.”
“From ideation to implementation, this comprehensive suite of products and services helps shrink AI adoption timelines from months to weeks and eliminate the deployment delays associated with SaaS solutions and large consulting firm engagements. It also helps us fulfill our commitment to creating future-ready, scalable and sustainable solutions that continue to empower our clients to transform their businesses.”
Challenges Faced
What challenges have Arya and the team face in building the company? Arya acknowledged:
“The rise of Gen AI has reinforced a widespread misconception (or perhaps wishful thinking) that today’s off-the-shelf AI tools can produce deployment-ready AI solutions. That includes an assumption that a SaaS solution for applications like building chatbots or predictive models will get you all the way to the finish line. The truth is that SaaS solutions often come with predefined features and configurations that don’t fit the precise requirements of every project, so most SaaS providers make a lot more money in customization services than in selling SaaS subscriptions.”
“As a result, Blackstraw often expends significant effort explaining why we don’t use a SaaS model as well as why every implementation must be customized for each specific use case. Off-the-shelf technology solutions like our accelerators expedite processes from data acquisition and preparation to model training and solution deployment, but customization is always required for the last mile – whether by us or by any other provider.”
Evolution Of The Company’s Technology
How have the company’s offerings evolved since launching? Arya noted:
“Our journey began in the realm of computer vision modeling within data science. Over time, we expanded our expertise to building AI models designed to streamline processes — identifying complex data patterns, training large datasets to interpret those patterns, and fine-tuning models to enhance accuracy and reduce errors.”
“As we partnered with more enterprises, a common challenge emerged: the lack of AI-ready data. To address this gap, we evolved our focus. We established a robust data engineering practice, enabling data availability for AI models through strategies like common data platforms and data harmonization. This ensures that data is not only accessible but also meaningful for end users.”
“We also introduced a data acquisition strategy for enterprises lacking the relevant datasets for their use cases. Leveraging state-of-the-art platforms, we facilitated data extraction from documents, images, videos and online sources, providing a comprehensive solution for diverse data needs.”
“Over time, we developed accelerators to fast-track AI implementation, including:
— A proprietary data labeling platform that streamlines the preparation of high-quality training data
— A best-in-class data lake strategy enabling flexible and scalable data storage and analysis
— A custom MLOps platform supporting rapid AI model deployment, monitoring, and retraining to maintain accuracy amid evolving patterns
These offerings are powered by Blackstraw’s core team of top-tier engineers, who provide end-to-end strategic consulting and hands-on support at every stage of the AI journey. “
Significant Milestones
What have been some of the company’s most significant milestones? Arya cited:
“At Blackstraw, every time we onboard a new client and solve a new problem for them is a milestone. Our growing client portfolio now spans multibillion-dollar CPG, retail services and market research companies as well as major enterprises in healthcare staffing, manufacturing, logistics and utilities. Other clients include an auto parts manufacturer, jewelry retailer, a fintech company, and an aerospace and defense manufacturing company.”
“What is most rewarding is the long-term partnerships we have cultivated by building trust with our clients. Many clients utilize Blackstraw’s platform development work as the foundation for multiple AI initiatives every year. One notable example is a $14 billion frozen foods company that had data scattered in scores of silos. When their executive team approached us, our data scientists and engineers went to work collecting, labeling and consolidating all data sources into an AI-ready data lake built on Azure and Databricks. Today every business unit has access to this data and associated analysis and deployment tools, enabling rapid pilot development to test theories, validate potential models, and activate any number of AI projects to help optimize business results.”
Customer Success Stories
When asking Arya about customer success stories, he highlighted:
“One highlight is a manufacturing client that was experiencing double-digit revenue loss due to customer churn. Our team automated the process of acquiring and ingesting market research data and developed a churn prediction model using historical data, customer journey mapping, customer segmentation and sentiment analysis based on emails, reviews and social media posts. To enable them to adjust inventory budgets, we built a sales forecasting model including regional and product category breakdowns to help the finance team in the event of anticipated sales shortfalls. Results improved significantly, with a 65% jump in customer retention as well as a 12% growth in quarterly revenues.”
Other examples of successful Blackstraw AI project implementations include:
— A consumer retail receipt decoding platform to extract product, price and other data for a US market research company, slashing data collection time by 70% and saving $5 million in manual data collection costs
