Boeing announced that it has been selected by the U.S. Space Force for the next phase of the Mobile User Objective System Service Life Extension program.

The contract is valued at up to $2 billion and includes two narrowband communications satellites. The first satellite is scheduled for delivery in 2031.

The MUOS Service Life Extension program is designed to sustain and improve secure military communications for users operating around the world. The system supports military personnel on the ground, at sea, and in the air, especially in environments where reliable communications are difficult to maintain.

The new satellites will prioritize reliable voice and essential data connectivity. Boeing said the system is intended to help military users stay connected in demanding conditions, including difficult terrain, dense urban areas, and severe weather.

Boeing brings decades of experience in secure Ultra High Frequency communications to the program. The company also played a role in the current MUOS constellation by developing and delivering its payloads.

Ultra High Frequency communications are used because they can maintain connections in conditions where other communications links may struggle. Boeing’s approach for MUOS SLE is designed to increase communications capacity, reduce interference, and improve connectivity for global operations into the next decade.

The system will be built on Boeing’s 702MP medium-class spacecraft platform, which is designed to support high-capacity and high-performance communications missions. Boeing said it also brings recent production experience in this spacecraft class, having delivered multiple 702MP satellites since the fourth quarter of 2025.

The company said its active 702MP spacecraft production line provides execution momentum, proven reliability, and schedule predictability as it begins work on the MUOS SLE program.

KEY QUOTES:

“We’re grateful for the trust the U.S. Space Force has placed in our team for a capability that matters to military users around the world. For the people who depend on this connectivity, the need is clear: secure communication that works in demanding conditions. Our team knows this mission and is ready to help the customer extend and improve a system they count on every day.”

Sam Greaves, Vice President of Boeing Space Mission Systems

“This award builds on our deep UHF heritage and the trust we’ve built supporting this critical national security mission. When military users are operating in the most demanding conditions, this narrowband capability is their lifeline. By building on our active 702MP spacecraft production line, we bring immediate execution momentum, proven reliability, and schedule predictability to the U.S. Space Force.”
