BOXABL announced that Shanmugam “Shan” Palaniappan has joined the company as chief technology officer, a move intended to strengthen its software, automation, and artificial intelligence capabilities as the company scales its factory-built housing operations.
The Las Vegas–based modular housing company said the appointment comes as it continues transitioning from a high-growth startup into an industrial-scale housing manufacturer and while it pursues a proposed merger with FG Merger II Corp. (NASDAQ: FGMC).
Palaniappan brings more than two decades of technology leadership experience. Most recently, he served as senior vice president of engineering at Sagent, a mortgage and consumer fintech company recognized as a HousingWire Tech100 winner, where he led infrastructure and enterprise architecture.
Earlier in his career, Palaniappan served as chief technology officer of the SaaS platform at DataRobot and spent nearly a decade at Salesforce, including Demandware, working on high-performance platform engineering and customer field architecture. Across those roles, he helped build cloud-native systems, enterprise-grade infrastructure, and artificial intelligence-enabled platforms at scale.
BOXABL said Palaniappan’s background aligns with the company’s plans to digitally transform its operations as it expands manufacturing capacity, develops new housing products, and prepares for potential international deployment of its modular housing systems.
The company is known for its factory-built modular homes designed to be rapidly deployed and cost-efficient. Its flagship product, the Casita, is a 361-square-foot studio unit with a full kitchen, bathroom, and utilities that can unfold on site in less than an hour after delivery from the factory.
BOXABL has also introduced the Baby Box, a smaller 120-square-foot unit designed to meet RV code and support simpler installations that do not require traditional foundations. The company is additionally developing stackable and connectable box models that can be combined to create townhomes, multifamily housing, or larger single-family homes.
Founded in 2017, BOXABL has attracted global attention for its approach to addressing housing shortages through standardized, factory-built construction methods. The company said the proposed business combination with FG Merger II Corp., a special purpose acquisition company, is intended to provide greater strategic flexibility as it scales production and expands its product portfolio. If completed, the merger would help support the company’s plans to expand manufacturing capacity, broaden product lines, and pursue international deployment of its housing systems.
KEY QUOTE:
“Shan brings the ideal blend of technical expertise and real-world experience to help rewire BOXABL into an AI-native company. We plan to rearchitect the organization into a flat, seamlessly interconnected system powered by real-time data and embedded intelligence across every function — from sales forecasting and cost modeling to land feasibility and supply chain optimization. While it’s difficult to fully quantify the potential impact of this transformation, we believe it will significantly increase productivity and empower our team with greater digital agency. The exponential growth of software is happening so fast it’s critical for us to parse the value of these emerging tools and implement those features that can be most valuable to our organization. Shan has the awareness and skills to assess this software environment and implement decisions that have been made. Software is generally preceding hardware in development. By embracing complete digital solutions now, we believe we will be better prepared, when the time comes, for full software and hardware integration.”
Paolo Tiramani, Co-Chief Executive Officer Of BOXABL
