BragHumble is an AI-based accountability and fitness app that automatically uses your camera to count your reps without wearables and journals your progress while dropping knowledge about fitness. Pulse 2.0 interviewed BragHumble founder Dominic Pritham to learn more about the company.
Dominic Pritham’s Background
What is Dominic Pritham’s background? Pritham said:
“I am a software engineer by profession with 13 years of experience in various industries, including semiconductors, consumer electronics, medical devices, and IoT. I have worked at startups, midsize companies, and large giant corporations. I started my career working on very low-level microcontroller firmware, but with every new role, I kept moving up the stack to higher-level software applications.”
“One of my more recent roles as a software manager helped me bridge business, engineering, resource management and supply chain management. It helped me understand the importance of technology road map, understanding competition, translating customer needs to requirements and making sure those requirements are understood by the engineering team.”
Formation Of BragHumble
How did the idea for the company come together? Pritham shared:
“It wasn’t just one problem that led to the birth of BragHumble. For one, I always wanted to create something that brought value to users. Computer vision is a very interesting and challenging topic that intrigued me and I instantly fell in love with it. So I was looking to develop a product using computer vision to solve a particular problem.”
“On a more personal note, I was struggling to keep up with my physical health and wasn’t seeing much improvement in spite of going to the gym regularly. And being an engineer, I wanted to “debug” the issue. So I needed to collect data or “logs”. While going over my workout “logs” I realized that every time I felt winded, I would slow down or give up on that set. At the end of the workout, I would be happy that I worked out as if just showing up was all that mattered.”
“I needed quantifiable metrics to measure my output so I could compete with myself consistently and grow.”
“These are the two driving forces for BragHumble.”
Favorite Memory
What has been your favorite memory working for the company so far? Pritham reflected:
“Seeing the app work for friends and family for the first time and seeing it work on someone else other than me is my favorite memory. During the very early stages, I would invite friends or family to workout side by side. It was a learning opportunity for me to see firsthand how a user would interact with BragHumble. I would get instant feedback on what they were feeling. A validation I received after all these sessions was that the user pushed themselves because the app was counting their reps.”
Core Products
What are the company’s core products and features? Pritham explained:
“The various deep learning models that help classify human poses that are used to count reps. At the end of the workout, a detailed journal and the session are journaled. There are audio cues to guide the user through a workout, timers to indicate rest periods, audio feedback to correct form for certain exercises, sharing of workout reps with friends, customizing workouts, and quick demos.”
Challenges Faced
What challenges have Pritham and the team faced in building the company? Pritham acknowledged:
“The fitness app space is filled with apps that guide users with video playback or simply create a workout plan. While there are a few apps that focus on journaling, they are manual entries. Marketing to users who are fatigued with the notion of “yet another fitness app” is challenging. However, from customer feedback, once we have broken through that first workout, our retention numbers look great.”
Evolution Of BragHumble’s Technology
How has the company’s technology evolved since launching? Pritham noted:
“Accuracy is of utmost importance. Starting with a heuristic approach during the early releases, BragHumble quickly deployed a deep learning lightweight model for real-time inference. With the addition of new exercises and rapid scaling requirements, BragHumble currently employs a cascade of deep learning models approach, which has proven effective and accurate.”
Significant Milestones
What have been some of the company’s most significant milestones? Pritham cited:
“Adding weight training to the existing list of body weight exercises was a significant milestone. In addition, form correction has helped users improve posture and form.”
Funding
When asking Pritham about the company’s funding details, he revealed:
“At this point, my focus is to reach the various personas identified who can benefit from BragHumble. The app is currently free on the app store to encourage users to try it out without reservations. BragHumble is currently bootstrapped.”
Total Addressable Market
What total addressable market (TAM) size is the company pursuing? Pritham assessed:
“TAM for fitness apps in 2024 is in the range of $10 billion to $14 billion. The market is expected to grow significantly in the coming years.”
Differentiation From The Competition
What differentiates the company from its competition? Pritham affirmed:
“Fitness apps are a unidirectional conversation today. The creator of the app tells the user what to do. There is no two-way communication between the user and the app. At least not in an affordable and scalable manner. BragHumble solves this gap. It shifts the focus to what the user does, has to focus on and how they can improve.”
Future Company Goals
What are some of the company’s future goals? Pritham pointed out:
“BragHumble aims to add new exercises and workouts every month. In addition, higher level metrics are being developed to help with progressive overloading, goal tracking and reaching new personal records.”
Additional Thoughts
Any other topics you would like to discuss? Pritham concluded:
“BragHumble isn’t an app that replaces personal trainers. It alleviates the burden of video reviews and keeping a spreadsheet of clients. A personal trainer or coach can offload a lot of the manual data entry work to BragHumble and focus on building their client base.”
