BriefCatch, a legal-writing platform used by law firms and courts across the U.S., has acquired WordRake’s core product and technology assets in an asset purchase. The deal includes WordRake’s patented editing algorithms and a portfolio of 12 U.S. patents, bringing WordRake’s sentence-level clarity and concision capabilities under BriefCatch’s umbrella.
The acquisition aims to combine WordRake’s in-line, workflow-embedded editing signals with BriefCatch’s document and argument-level analysis focused on structure, emphasis, and persuasion. BriefCatch positioned the transaction as a response to rapidly evolving legal workflows, emphasizing tools that improve writing quality while keeping lawyers in control and preserving professional judgment.
WordRake will continue to operate as a standalone product for the near term and will remain fully supported for existing customers, including its integrations within Microsoft Word and Outlook. Existing licenses will be honored, and BriefCatch said it has a roadmap for future integration while maintaining continuity during the transition.
As part of the deal, WordRake CEO Scott Johns will join BriefCatch as a strategic advisor. BriefCatch said the addition of WordRake’s patented technology expands its quality-control and editing capabilities for high-stakes legal documents, reinforcing its goal of setting a professional standard for legal writing through practical, expert-informed guidance embedded directly in the tools lawyers already use.
