Browserbase: Web Browser Automation Company Raises $21 Million (Series A)

By Amit Chowdhry • Nov 12, 2024

Browserbase, a leader in web browser automation, announced it raised $21 million in Series A funding co-led by CRV and Kleiner Perkins, with participation from Okta Ventures and Reed McGinley-Stempel, CEO of Stych. And Browserbase’s Series A funding was raised in less than nine months and comes hot on the heels of the company’s $6.5 million seed round.

Developers depend on headless web browsers to interact with the web programmatically. However, these browsers are especially difficult to run in a production environment. With Browserbase’s infrastructure platform for running headless web browsers, customers connect to a managed web browser that integrates seamlessly with their existing code, reducing complexity and improving performance.

Browserbase founder Paul Klein is a serial entrepreneur with a proven track record, having already netted a successful exit with his prior startup. He cut his teeth at Twilio. Klein joined the legendary developer infrastructure company prior to its blockbuster IPO and rose through Twilio’s ranks during the company’s rapid ascension.

Klein’s team and Browserbase quickly gained adoption across hundreds of AI startups building in industries such as AI agents, B2B software, professional services, web scraping and automated testing. And customers span a variety of categories, relying on Browserbase to automate web tasks more effectively and efficiently.

With this funding round, Browserbase will expand its team, support new product launches, and invest in platform improvements. One of the company’s next significant milestones is the launch of Stagehand, an open-source, AI-powered web automation SDK, which it also unveiled today. Stagehand is designed to turn natural language inputs into browser automation code, simplifying the process for developers and LLMs alike.

Browserbase is also rolling out several key initiatives, including:

  1. SOC-2 Type 1 and HIPAA compliance, ensuring the platform meets the highest security and data privacy standards.
  2. Expanding to 4 new browser regions significantly reduces customer connection latency globally.
  3. Scaling the engineering team to accelerate product development and platform enhancements.

Through a growing base of technical founders, heads of engineering, and software engineers relying on its technology, Browserbase is well-positioned to continue transforming how developers interact with the web. The Series A funding round will drive Browserbase’s commitment to pushing forward the capabilities of web agents through Stagehand and other innovations.

KEY QUOTES:

“The future of software is AI doing work for you, which means interacting with the websites and web applications people use every single day. Web browsers are an essential platform to execute these automations, but developers need help running them. The number of applications leveraging Playwright, the most popular headless browser framework, has grown nearly fivefold in the last year alone. We’re thrilled to empower developers with the infrastructure they so sorely need to scale these automations effortlessly.”

“Developers have found it incredibly frustrating to generate reliable browser automation code using LLMs. With Stagehand, we’re creating a solution that allows for generic workflows to interact with any webpage, removing this complexity. We believe the web browser is an extensible platform that will serve as the runtime for many AI agents, and we are building the tools to make that vision a reality.”

  • Paul Klein IV, founder of Browserbase

“Headless web browsers have always been a critical piece of infrastructure, but the demand for automation—driven by LLMs and AI agents—has transformed how developers build and deploy browser-based tools. Browserbase is in a prime position to lead this space given the team’s technical prowess and deep knowledge of the space because it provides the necessary infrastructure and simplifies the process for developers. We’re excited to support Browserbase’s growth as they provide the necessary infrastructure and simplify developers’ lives.”
