Buildcheck AI has raised $5.9 million in seed funding to scale an AI-powered platform that reviews construction drawings and flags design issues before they become costly problems in the field. The round was led by Uncork Capital, with participation from Peterson Ventures and Xfund, as well as strategic angel investments from founders and senior executives affiliated with companies including OpenAI, Opendoor, CBRE, and Zillow.
Based in San Francisco, Buildcheck positions its software as an automated design-review layer for pre-construction teams working on increasingly complex projects and under tighter timelines. The company said its system analyzes 2D construction documents across major disciplines, including architectural, structural, civil, mechanical, electrical, and plumbing, running hundreds of checks to surface errors, omissions, and coordination conflicts. Buildcheck’s pitch is that these issues often slip through traditional manual review processes and then reappear later as change orders, RFIs, delays, and margin pressure once work is underway.
Buildcheck serves more than 50 paying customers, including AvalonBay Communities and Novo Construction. The company also claimed its platform generates a 10 to 35 times return on investment by preventing on-site surprises during pre-construction, where design decisions and documentation quality have an outsized impact on downstream cost and schedule.
In addition to customer adoption, Buildcheck highlighted a series of awards and accelerator selections it has received in 2025, including recognition from the Cemex Construction Startup Competition, EllisDon’s ConTech Accelerator, Cityscape Global, Buildex Alberta, and the Setia AI and PropTech Innovation Challenge powered by Ibex. The company framed these as indicators of growing industry interest in applying AI to one of construction’s most persistent operational challenges: catching design mistakes early enough to avoid expensive rework later.
Buildcheck was founded by Alexander Michalatos, Andrei Molchynsky, and Alex Gureev, who met at Stanford University and bring a blend of construction management and AI development experience. Buildcheck also said its models are improving through collaborations with research institutions, including MILA and AMII, supported by advisors with experience at organizations such as OpenAI, ServiceNow, and Oxford University.
How the funding will be used: The funding will be used to accelerate AI model development, add to engineering and operations teams, and expand product capabilities as it deepens its footprint with developers, general contractors, and design teams seeking faster review cycles and more consistent quality control.
KEY QUOTES:
“Every missed issue in a drawing becomes a surprise expense on-site. We traditionally performed manual drawing reviews of our large projects, but we were looking for a more efficient method. Buildcheck helps us reduce risk and make better use of our time and capital.”
Joe Kirchofer, Senior Vice President – Northern California, AvalonBay Communities
“General contractors and commercial real estate developers are facing increasing challenges with design quality, accuracy, and errors, and we could not be more thrilled with the response and rapid adoption of our technology, saving our customers time, money, and headaches throughout the pre-construction process.”
Alexander Michalatos, CEO and Co-Founder of Buildcheck
“Our AI analyzes 2D drawings like an experienced construction professional — but faster, more consistently, and across every discipline simultaneously. Our technology isn’t just automating review; it’s setting an entirely new standard of accuracy and efficiency in pre-construction, and it’s rewarding to see the industry embrace an innovation we’ve made possible.”
Alex Gureev, Co-Founder and AI Development Lead, Buildcheck
“Our customers are catching issues that would have cost them hundreds of thousands of dollars in change orders and delays. Beyond quality control, Buildcheck turns design reviews into an investment — helping teams move faster, reduce RFIs, and protect margins.”
Andrei Molchynsky, Co-Founder of Buildcheck
“Construction is a $12 trillion market where design errors create more than $200 billion in waste each year. Buildcheck combines deep domain expertise with a computer vision platform that catches issues in drawings early, before they turn into costly problems in the field. They’ve built an elegant and effective AI application that is already delivering measurable ROI for general contractors, developers, and designers, tightening review cycles and improving accuracy where it matters.”
