Burns Engineering has acquired PRVN Consultants, expanding its Power & Utilities capabilities and strengthening its presence across the Midwest.
Founded in 2011, PRVN Consultants is a specialized engineering firm serving the district energy, power generation, and combined heat and power markets.
The company provides mechanical, electrical, controls, and structural engineering services for central energy plants, utility distribution systems, industrial process facilities, and related infrastructure.
Its technical capabilities include combined heat and power, power generation, central heating and chilled water plants, thermal energy storage, renewable fuels, geothermal energy, process water treatment, process controls, and automation.
Burns said the acquisition is intended to broaden the firm’s ability to support complex energy and utility infrastructure projects while adding complementary engineering expertise.
The combination also expands Burns’ geographic footprint in the Midwest, where PRVN operates from offices in Iowa, Illinois, Indiana, and Wisconsin.
PRVN provides planning, design, construction support, and commissioning services for central energy plants, utility distribution networks, and other related infrastructure.
Burns said PRVN’s experience with district energy and power generation projects complements its existing Power & Utilities practice and will allow the combined organization to provide more integrated engineering solutions.
The companies also highlighted PRVN’s repeat business, collaborative approach, and focus on practical engineering as areas that align with Burns’ client service model.
Burns Engineering has operated since 1960 and provides specialized engineering services for transportation, power, utilities, and other critical infrastructure markets.
The firm was ranked among the ENR Top 500 Design Firms in 2026 and has built its business around highly technical infrastructure projects and client-focused engineering services.
The acquisition is expected to create additional opportunities for PRVN employees while giving existing PRVN clients access to Burns’ broader national platform and infrastructure capabilities.
Together, Burns and PRVN plan to support institutional, industrial, and utility clients seeking to improve the efficiency, reliability, resilience, and sustainability of energy systems across the Midwest and other U.S. markets.
