Cambium Acquires General Woodcraft, Adding 77-Year-Old Specialty Wood Distributor to Its National Wood Market Platform

Cambium, a technology-driven platform modernizing how wood is sourced, priced, and distributed across the United States, has acquired General Woodcraft, a Connecticut-based specialty wood products company founded in 1949. The deal marks Cambium’s fifth acquisition in five years, following Lumber Tracker, OE Custom, Forward Forestry, and Intectural, and further builds out the company’s ambition to create a single national network connecting regional wood suppliers with architects, builders, and enterprise buyers. Financial terms were not disclosed.

Founded in New London, Connecticut, General Woodcraft has spent more than seven decades serving the architecture, design, and construction communities with specialty wood products including hardwood decking, architectural millwork, siding and rainscreen systems, wood countertops, mantels, and marine wood products. The company holds FSC (Forest Stewardship Council) certification and made a deliberate strategic shift away from tropical hardwoods in favor of domestically sourced, sustainably harvested alternatives — a direction that aligns directly with Cambium’s own sourcing philosophy. General Woodcraft’s portfolio includes Mataverde SaferWood, a proprietary ignition-resistant thermally modified wood line, and the Climate Shield rainscreen system, both of which are gaining traction in wildfire-exposed markets such as California where architects and builders are increasingly specifying resilient, fire-resistant materials.

The acquisition extends Cambium’s bicoastal reach and deepens its relationships with major building materials distribution channels, including US LBM, SRS Distribution, and Golden State Lumber, as well as corporate accounts spanning Gilbane, Cava, and Goldman Sachs. General Woodcraft’s technical expertise in product specification, sourcing, and lead time management — built over decades of direct engagement with the design and building communities — adds a knowledge layer to Cambium’s platform that complements its technology-driven approach to supply chain coordination.

Cambium manufactures its own product line, Carbon Smart Wood, made from salvaged urban trees, and operates a platform that aggregates regional wood suppliers — including landowners, arborists, sawmills, and haulers — into a coordinated national marketplace. The General Woodcraft acquisition adds premium building products inventory and established customer relationships on the demand side of that marketplace.

KEY QUOTES:

“The wood industry is built on relationships and expertise, but it has never had the technology to connect it. That is what we are building at Cambium: one national network that modernizes how wood is sourced, priced and moved. General Woodcraft spent 77 years earning the trust of architects and builders, and that is exactly the kind of expertise our platform is designed to carry further, not replace.”

Ben Christensen, Co-Founder and CEO, Cambium

“We have deep knowledge of product characteristics, lead times, sourcing, pricing and that does not change. We chose Cambium because it gives our customers more products, more logistical support and superior pricing. Cambium provides our customers with forward thinking technologies to improve their buying experience. It is the best next chapter for the people we have served for 77 years.”
