Caterpillar announced it has acquired Skycatch, a provider of spatial data capture, processing, and analytics solutions for the mining industry. The acquisition builds on Caterpillar’s recent purchase of RPMGlobal and expands the company’s portfolio of digital mining technologies by adding near-real-time spatial data and artificial intelligence capabilities designed to help mining customers optimize material movement and improve operational performance.
Skycatch specializes in capturing high-frequency, high-precision spatial data across large mining sites and transforming that information into actionable insights using AI. By integrating these capabilities with Caterpillar’s MineStar platform and RPMGlobal’s mining software, customers will gain access to near-real-time digital representations of mine sites, enabling faster and more informed operational decisions.
The combined technology is expected to improve mine planning and execution by giving operators continuous visibility into changing site conditions. With more accurate and up-to-date information, mining companies can adjust production plans more quickly, reduce delays, improve productivity, and increase predictability across both staffed and autonomous mining fleets.
The acquisition also advances Caterpillar’s broader strategy of expanding its technology offerings for the mining industry. By combining equipment, software, automation, and AI-driven analytics, the company aims to deliver more integrated solutions that enhance safety, operational efficiency, and overall mine performance.
Skycatch’s technology generates near-real-time digital twins of mining operations, allowing customers to incorporate current spatial data directly into planning and execution workflows. This enables mining teams to better align operational plans with actual field conditions while improving the speed and precision of decision-making.
KEY QUOTES:
“Acquiring Skycatch aligns with our strategy to solve our customers’ toughest challenges. By integrating near-real-time, high-resolution spatial data into both RPM and MineStar solutions, we can help customers improve mine site performance by enhancing safety, productivity and predictability across their operations using both staffed and autonomous fleets.”
Denise Johnson, Group President of Resource Industries at Caterpillar
“Skycatch’s ability to process large volumes of spatial data at dramatically improved speeds opens up a fundamentally different way of operating. With a near real-time spatial view of the operation, miners can adjust plans as conditions change, improve alignment between planning and execution, and deliver more predictable outcomes.”
Richard Mathews, CEO of RPMGlobal
“We’re incredibly proud of what Skycatch has built over the past decade and excited for this next chapter with Caterpillar. This next step strengthens our ability to support our customers while increasing the value we can deliver.”
Christian Sanz, Founder & CEO of Skycatch
