Cathedral, a newly formed defense technology startup founded by former Department of Government Efficiency employees, has raised $160 million at a $1.4 billion valuation, according to Reuters. Andreessen Horowitz and Sequoia Capital reportedly led the round, with representatives from both venture capital firms taking seats on Cathedral’s board.
The company was launched in recent months by former DOGE staffers Gavin Kliger, Luke Farritor, Marko Elez and Jack Stein. Cathedral is seeking U.S. government contracts to develop artificial intelligence-powered cybersecurity capabilities for military and national security applications.
Its planned technology reportedly includes both defensive and offensive cyber capabilities aimed at strengthening the United States’ ability to respond to adversaries, including China.
Defensive cyber operations generally focus on identifying vulnerabilities, monitoring networks, detecting intrusions and protecting military or government systems. Offensive operations can involve disrupting, degrading or gaining access to an adversary’s digital infrastructure under government authorization.
Cathedral is also considering acquiring a data center or partnering with a data center operator to provide dedicated computing resources for its cyber operations.
Dedicated infrastructure could give the company greater control over the performance, availability and security of the computing systems used to train and operate its AI models. National security workloads can require additional protections because they may involve sensitive government information, classified environments or operational data that cannot be processed through conventional public cloud services.
The company has not publicly disclosed specific products, customers, contracts or deployment timelines.
The $1.4 billion valuation reflects substantial investor interest in defense technology companies developing AI, cybersecurity and autonomous systems for government customers.
Venture capital firms have increasingly backed companies seeking to modernize military technology, particularly as the Pentagon works to adopt commercially developed software and reduce dependence on slower traditional procurement processes.
Cathedral’s founders may also bring knowledge of federal operations and government technology systems from their time at DOGE, although those relationships could bring additional scrutiny as the company pursues public-sector contracts.
Kliger recently served as chief data officer at the Pentagon. According to Reuters, he was involved in the Defense Department’s dispute with Anthropic regarding restrictions on how the military could use the AI company’s technology.
That experience could give Cathedral insight into the policy, security and procurement challenges surrounding military adoption of commercial AI models.
Farritor previously interned at SpaceX and oversaw cost-reduction initiatives at the U.S. General Services Administration during his time with DOGE.
Elez also worked at SpaceX before joining DOGE, where he worked within the U.S. Treasury Department. His access to sensitive government information drew judicial concern during litigation involving DOGE’s activities.
Elez initially resigned after The Wall Street Journal reported racist posts associated with a social media account. He later returned after President Donald Trump and Vice President JD Vance publicly supported his reinstatement.
Cathedral’s launch comes amid continued interest in companies founded by former DOGE employees. Andreessen Horowitz recently invested in Special, another startup founded by former DOGE personnel that applies government-style cost-reduction methods to corporate operations.
Cathedral differs by focusing on national security and military cybersecurity, an area where successful companies can potentially secure large, multiyear government contracts.
The Pentagon and organizations such as the Office of Strategic Capital have sought deeper partnerships with venture-backed technology companies. These initiatives are intended to accelerate the development of strategically important technologies and make private capital more available to companies serving national security priorities.
Cathedral’s funding could support the recruitment of cybersecurity researchers, AI engineers, military specialists and government contracting personnel. It could also help finance the computing infrastructure required to train and deploy models for cyber analysis, network defense and autonomous operations.
Building an AI-powered cyber platform for the military would require the company to address significant technical and regulatory requirements. These could include securing classified information, complying with government cybersecurity standards, controlling access to sensitive systems and demonstrating that AI-generated actions remain predictable and subject to human authorization.
Offensive cyber applications may face additional oversight because mistakes could disrupt unintended systems, reveal intelligence capabilities or contribute to escalation with another country.
Cathedral’s connections to the current administration may help the company establish relationships with national security officials and identify potential contracting opportunities. However, those relationships could also create political risk.
A change in congressional control or a future administration could lead to reviews of government contracts awarded to companies associated with DOGE or current administration officials.
Cathedral could therefore face questions about procurement procedures, conflicts of interest and whether contracts were awarded through competitive and transparent processes.
The company will also compete with established defense contractors, cybersecurity providers and other venture-backed startups seeking to supply AI technology to the U.S. government.
Its $160 million financing gives Cathedral substantial resources for a recently launched company, but its future growth will depend on whether it can convert its technical plans and government relationships into operational products and awarded contracts.
