CellarTracker: Interview With Founder & CEO Eric LeVine About The Wine Management Platform

CellarTracker is a comprehensive, community-driven wine management platform that allows users to digitize their collections, scan labels, track drinking windows, and access millions of user-generated and professional tasting notes. Pulse 2.0 interviewed CellarTracker founder and CEO Eric LeVine to learn more.

Could you tell me more about your background? LeVine said:

“I started my career in technology at Microsoft, where I spent 13 years helping to build products like Office and the ‘send error report’ feature that reached millions of users. My background is really rooted in building scalable tools that create structured, actionable data where none was previously apparent.”

“Outside of tech, wine became a passion for me during a trip to Italy in 1999. I really got the collecting bug in 2001, but then I also realized just how hard it was to remember what I owned, what I loved, and when a bottle was actually ready to drink. That mix of discovery, data, and a desire to make sense of it all ultimately led me to create CellarTracker.”

Formation Of The Company

How did the idea for the company come together? LeVine shared:

“CellarTracker began as a personal project. In 2003, I built a tool to track my own cellar because spreadsheets just weren’t cutting it. I shared it with a few friends, and word spread fast–within months, thousands of collectors were using it. What started as a simple utility evolved into a global community of people passionate about wine and data. Today, CellarTracker has grown into the world’s most trusted wine app, with more than 10 million users, 200 million bottles logged, and 13 million tasting notes shared. And the community has evolved too: what began as a tool for collectors is now equally valuable for newcomers who simply want a bottle they’ll enjoy without the guesswork.”

Favorite Memory

What has been your favorite memory working for the company so far? LeVine reflected:

“There are so many, and it always comes back to the joy of creation. In the earliest days of the site I did not have any support tools or even a discussion forum. I was just mailing users individually. I remember on December 24, 2004 creating a feature for Printing Restaurant-Style Wine Lists and emailing it out to users. People were overjoyed, and I woke up on Christmas Day to a customer email. It contained a large picture of a customer who was absolutely BEAMING with joy, wearing a Santa Hat, holding a printout of his wine cellar. Apparently he was so excited that his wife took the picture and told him to send it to me, as I apparently (accidentally) upstaged Christmas in that household with my new surprise feature.”

What are the company’s core products and features? LeVine explained:

“CellarTracker really lives at the intersection of two things: it’s a cellar management tool, and it’s a discovery platform shaped entirely by the community. At its core, it helps people keep track of the wines they own, everything from where a bottle is stored to what they paid for it to when it’s expected to drink well. But the thing people often fall in love with is the depth of shared knowledge on the platform. We have more than 13 million tasting notes and reviews from real users, which creates this incredibly rich layer of insight you can’t find anywhere else.”

“Over the past couple of years, we’ve added AI on top of that data, which allows us to give personalized recommendations based on a user’s individual taste and their past ratings. And then there’s the pricing side, we surface real-world market values so people can understand what a fair price looks like before they buy or open a bottle.”

“So whether someone’s a casual drinker who wants a good pick for dinner or a serious collector with thousands of bottles, the idea is the same: make wine easier to understand, easier to enjoy, and easier to explore.”

Challenges Faced

Have you faced any challenges in your sector of work recently? LeVine acknowledged:

“As we’ve grown, a big challenge has been scaling the platform without losing the trust and authenticity that built it in the first place. Communities are sacred and are built on trust and a conscious set of values. We’ve made deliberate choices to keep CellarTracker unbiased and community-driven, even as we introduce new AI features. That balance, innovation without losing our core values, has guided how we evolve the product. Likewise, we consciously try not to wade into wine commerce, as most people in the industry seem to want to hit you with wine offers seemingly every 5 minutes.”

Evolution Of The Company’s Technology

How has the company’s technology evolved since launching? LeVine noted:

“We’ve come a long way from the early days of a simple web database. The platform is now powered by AI models that can interpret millions of tasting notes to provide personalized recommendations, trend insights, and optimal drinking forecasts. The redesign of our mobile app was another major leap. It’s faster, more intuitive, and designed for both collectors and casual users.”

Significant Milestones

What have been some of the company’s most significant milestones? LeVine cited:

“Hitting 10 million users, 5 million wines, 10 million public tasting notes, and logging over 200 million bottles are all major milestones that officially made CellarTracker the largest wine inventory database in the world, which still blows my mind considering this started as a little project in my basement.”

“Another major moment was launching our new mobile app. It was a complete reimagining of the experience, and seeing how quickly users embraced it was incredibly rewarding. And then there’s the work we’ve done with AI. Being able to take 20 years of community tasting notes and turn that into personalized, meaningful recommendations feels like a huge step forward for making wine more approachable.”

“But honestly, the milestone I’m most proud of is the fact that we’ve built all of this through trust and word-of-mouth. It’s been a community carrying the platform for two decades because they find real value in it. That’s something I take enormous pride in.”

Customer Success Stories

Can you share any specific customer success stories? LeVine highlighted:

“CellarTracker touches millions of engaged wine collectors in a variety of ways around a topic (wine) that is deeply passionate for them. So we hear thousands of times a year how we are able to help people get more focus and joy out of their wine collecting and appreciation.”

Funding/Revenue

Are you able to discuss funding and/or revenue metrics? LeVine revealed:

“We’ve taken a very different path from most tech companies–CellarTracker has been profitable and self-sustaining for years. In 2021, after 18 years of purely organic growth, we brought in a small group of strategic investors to help scale product development and data analytics, but we’ve always focused on sustainable growth, not growth at any cost.”

Differentiation From The Competition

What differentiates the company from its competition? LeVine affirmed:

“Two things: community and credibility. We don’t sell wine, so our data is unbiased. Every insight on the platform comes from real people sharing authentic experiences. That transparency builds trust, and trust builds community. It’s also the scale: $21 billion worth of bottles tracked and 13 million reviews give CellarTracker a depth of data no one else can match.”

Future Company Goals

What are some of the company’s future goals? LeVine concluded:

“We’re focused on making our AI tools even more helpful so people can quickly get the insights they need to feel confident in their choices, whether that’s finding great value, knowing when to open a bottle, or simply discovering something new they’ll love.”

“We also want to make wine more approachable for newcomers without diluting the credibility of the platform. That means designing features and tools that welcome beginners while still serving seasoned enthusiasts.”
