- Alphabet has announced that X moonshot factory company Chronicle will be merging into Google Cloud
Alphabet has announced that it is merging its enterprise security company Chronicle into Google Cloud in the coming weeks. Chronicle had originally launched from the X moonshot factory — which is Alphabet’s experimental incubator for ambitious projects.
Why is Chronicle merging with Google Cloud? Chronicle’s products and engineering team complement what Google Cloud offers.
For example, Chronicle’s VirusTotal malware intelligence services will be a powerful addition to the pool of threat data that informs Google Cloud offerings and it will continue to support applications running on the platform. And Chronicle’s Backstory investigation flows are being added to Google Cloud’s detection, incident management, and remediation capabilities in order to create an end-to-end solution to enable customers to detect and mitigate threats faster within their cloud deployments and across the whole enterprise.
“Chronicle has received widespread recognition in the industry for its security vision, engineering team and solutions,” said Google Cloud CEO Thomas Kurian in a statement. “It’s incredibly exciting to have the Chronicle team join our organization and to bring our combined product offerings to our customers. We believe that together, we will continue to expand Google’s broader commitment to security and to providing the best security offerings to enterprise customers.”
It is unknown what role Chronicle CEO Stephen Gillett will play at Google Cloud. But he pointed out that the integration is expected to be completed sometime this fall and work on accelerated product integrations and roadmaps are beginning immediately.
Google Cloud also recently acquired Looker for $2.6 billion. This was Kurian’s first major acquisition since he succeeded Diane Greene. Looker is a business intelligence software and big data analytics platform that helps users explore, analyze, and share real-time business analytics.
