CIBC has appointed former Canadian Ambassador to the United States David MacNaughton as a Strategic Advisor, adding a senior public-policy and cross-border trade voice to the bank’s recently established Office of the CEO.
In the role, MacNaughton will advise senior business leaders across public policy, regulatory developments, and stakeholder relations, while also working alongside CIBC’s vice-chairs to support strategic client relationships and help clients assess growth opportunities amid shifting market and policy conditions.
MacNaughton is a veteran diplomat and business advisor who served as Canada’s ambassador to the U.S. from 2016 to 2019, a period that included the renegotiation of the North American Free Trade Agreement. CIBC said his experience navigating cross-border relations and trade dynamics will complement its client-focused growth strategy across Canada and the U.S.
Before joining CIBC, MacNaughton served as chairman of StrategyCorp, where he worked with organizations on public policy and stakeholder engagement. CIBC positioned the appointment as part of a broader build-out of its Office of the CEO, which it says is designed to provide enterprise-wide coordination and higher-touch advisory support for the bank’s most important clients and partners.
