Cineplex, Canada’s largest movie theater operator, has appointed Bill Walker as Chief Executive Officer, effective September 23, 2026, while announcing that its Board of Directors has initiated a strategic review that could include a potential sale of the company. Walker succeeds longtime CEO Ellis Jacob, who will remain involved as Special Advisor to the Board through December 31, 2026, supporting the leadership transition and the evaluation of strategic alternatives.
Walker joins Cineplex following an extensive board-led succession process that included a global search and consideration of internal candidates.
He previously served as CEO of Landmark Cinemas, Canada’s second-largest movie theater operator, which is owned by Belgian cinema company Kinepolis Group.
During his nine-year tenure at Landmark, Walker oversaw operations, capital allocation, and initiatives involving guest experience and theater development.
He also played a leadership role in Landmark’s sale to Kinepolis in 2017, subsequently continuing to lead the Canadian theater business under its new ownership.
His appointment brings an executive with experience in cinema operations and corporate transactions to Cineplex at a time when the company is evaluating its strategic direction.
Alongside the leadership transition, Cineplex’s Board has initiated a formal review of alternatives intended to enhance shareholder value.
The process will consider a range of potential transactions, including a sale of the company, although no decision has been made regarding any specific outcome.
Cineplex has appointed Goldman Sachs and TD Securities as co-financial advisors for the strategic review, with Goodmans LLP serving as legal counsel.
The review will be overseen by the company’s Board of Directors, working alongside senior management, Ellis Jacob, and its external advisors.
According to the Board, the process reflects its assessment of Cineplex’s current market valuation relative to the company’s entertainment assets, consumer brands, and long-term business opportunities.
The Board intends to evaluate available alternatives while continuing to execute Cineplex’s existing operating strategy.
No timetable has been established for the strategic review, and the company cautioned that the process may not result in a transaction or other strategic outcome.
Walker will lead the business while the review proceeds, focusing on operational performance, guest experience, and Cineplex’s longer-term commercial opportunities.
The leadership transition follows the previously announced retirement of Ellis Jacob, who has served as president and CEO of Cineplex and its predecessor organizations for more than three decades.
During his tenure, Cineplex expanded beyond traditional movie theaters into a diversified entertainment and media business.
The company’s operations now span Film Entertainment and Content, Amusement and Leisure, and Media.
Cineplex operates a network of 168 movie theaters and location-based entertainment venues across Canada.
Its entertainment businesses include The Rec Room, which combines dining with games and entertainment; Playdium, which focuses on entertainment experiences for teenagers and families; and Cineplex Junxion, which integrates movie theaters, amusement gaming, dining, and live performances.
The company also operates Cineplex Media, Cineplex Events, and Cineplex Pictures, extending its business into advertising, alternative entertainment programming, and film distribution.
Cineplex is also a partner in Scene+, a Canadian entertainment and lifestyle loyalty program.
The company employs more than 10,000 people across its offices and entertainment venues.
These operations provide Walker with a diversified business that extends beyond theatrical exhibition, including additional revenue opportunities involving location-based entertainment, food and beverage, media, and loyalty programs.
Jacob’s continued involvement through the end of 2026 is intended to support the transition while giving the Board access to his institutional knowledge and industry relationships.
The Board has emphasized that Cineplex will continue operating its businesses and pursuing its existing strategic priorities throughout the review.
Any potential transaction would depend on the outcome of the process and subsequent decisions by the Board.
