Clarios Expands Low-Voltage Energy Storage Portfolio With Acquisition Of Maxwell Technologies

By Amit Chowdhry ● Yesterday at 8:14 AM

Clarios, a global leader in low-voltage energy storage solutions, announced its acquisition of Maxwell Technologies, a U.S.-based manufacturer of supercapacitor cells and modules used in mobility, grid, and onsite power applications, including data centers. Financial terms of the transaction were not disclosed.

The acquisition enhances Clarios’ position in high-performance, short-duration energy storage technologies and broadens its reach across both automotive and non-automotive sectors. Unlike traditional batteries, supercapacitors can charge and discharge energy almost instantaneously, making them ideal for managing power surges, storing excess energy, and supporting systems during periods of peak demand. They can deliver up to one million cycles, function across extreme temperatures ranging from -40°C to +65°C, and require no maintenance or fire-risk mitigation.

According to the company, the acquisition of Maxwell Technologies will strengthen Clarios’ supply chain resilience, supporting its commitment to building a reliable supercapacitor ecosystem that serves both U.S. and global original equipment customers. The deal also aligns with Clarios’ broader leadership in battery circularity and sustainable low-voltage energy systems.

Maxwell Technologies brings more than three decades of experience in supercapacitor innovation. The company has shipped over 85 million supercapacitor cells and developed applications across various sectors, including energy generation, grid stabilization, automotive, transportation, and industrial automation. This expertise will enable Clarios to expand further its capabilities in delivering next-generation energy storage solutions to both existing and emerging markets.

Clarios stated that Maxwell Technologies will continue operating as an independent U.S.-based business unit under its ownership.

KEY QUOTES:

“Maxwell’s supercapacitors are designed to provide customers with high-power energy storage solutions that emphasize reliability, safety, and long life. This integration strengthens our ability to serve our automotive customers and creates a long-term opportunity to expand our presence in non-automotive sectors. Maxwell’s existing customer relationships in Data Centers, Grid, Military and Industrial applications will be maintained and actively developed under Clarios’ leadership.”
