CleanDesign: $20 Million Raised To Scale Hybrid Energy Management Software Across Oil, Gas And Mining

CleanDesign, a Toronto and Nashville-based software-driven energy technology company, has secured a $20 million growth investment led by Edison Partners. The capital will support accelerated deployment of CleanDesign’s Hybrid Energy Management Systems across North America, with particular momentum in the mining sector.

CleanDesign’s platform combines battery storage with proprietary software and AI to optimize power usage across diesel-based industrial systems, enabling operators to reduce fuel consumption, extend equipment life, and lower emissions without replacing existing infrastructure. The software layer collects 60,000 data points per second from each unit to dynamically optimize performance in real time, giving operators a hardware-agnostic solution that layers intelligence onto what they already have.

The company’s systems are deployed across leading drilling service providers and remote mining operations in regions including Mexico and Nunavut in Canada’s Arctic Circle, where diesel can cost as much as $10 per gallon due to transportation logistics. In these environments, CleanDesign’s technology cuts diesel consumption by approximately 10 to 15 percent, with customers reporting improved uptime and up to 20% reductions in emissions, with cost savings flowing directly to the bottom line.

With the new capital, CleanDesign plans to scale deployment of its hEMS units, expand into additional mining and remote energy applications, and continue development of new products including its Highline system, designed to help industrial operations connect to grid power while optimizing energy usage through software.

As part of the investment, Edison Partners’ Steve Zieja and Gregg Michaelson will join CleanDesign’s Board of Directors. Edison Partners manages $2.2 billion in assets and has a portfolio of digital infrastructure investments, including 120Water, Budderfly, Overhaul, RapidDeploy, and Seismos.

KEY QUOTES:

“In the past year, we’ve seen increasingly strong traction, especially in mining, alongside clear proof of unit economics in the field. Customers are realizing improved uptime and up to 20 percent reductions in emissions, and cost savings that go straight to the bottom line all without disrupting their existing operations. In remote mining, operators rely heavily on diesel to keep sites running. We’re helping reduce that dependence while improving reliability in environments where alternatives have been limited.”

Mark Lerohl, CEO, CleanDesign

“This is a segment of critical infrastructure that has seen limited software innovation. CleanDesign layers intelligent, hardware-agnostic software onto existing infrastructure, which means operators get real performance gains without replacing what they have. Mark and the team have built something genuinely differentiated here and earned real trust in environments where that’s hard to do. There’s a massive installed base, and they’re well positioned to go after it.”
