Cloudflare announced it has acquired The Astro Technology Company team, bringing the creators of the Astro JavaScript web framework into the connectivity cloud provider as it looks to accelerate development of what it calls a leading framework for fast, content-driven websites. Cloudflare said Astro will remain open source under its stewardship, positioning the deal as a long-term commitment to sustaining and growing the project while keeping it available to the broader developer ecosystem.
Astro has gained traction as a performance-focused framework by limiting the amount of JavaScript shipped on initial page load, a design intended to improve site speed, search rankings, and conversion rates for content-heavy sites. Cloudflare said Astro is used by major brands including Unilever, Visa, and NBC News, and noted that Astro already underpins platforms such as Webflow and Wix that run on Cloudflare.
Cloudflare CEO Matthew Prince said the acquisition reflects the company’s view that investing in open source tools is critical to maintaining a free and open Internet, and said Cloudflare intends to ensure Astro remains a top choice for content-driven websites for years to come. Astro CEO Fred Schott said joining Cloudflare will allow the team to scale Astro’s development faster while keeping the framework broadly usable regardless of hosting provider.
The announcement comes as Astro introduced the beta release of Astro 6, which Cloudflare said adds support for additional JavaScript runtimes, improves performance, and speeds up build times. Cloudflare also said it will continue backing open-source contributions through the Astro Ecosystem Fund alongside partners including Webflow, Netlify, Wix, and Sentry. Terms of the transaction were not disclosed, and Cloudflare noted the acquisition is subject to customary closing conditions.
