Coinbase To Buy The Clearing Company To Expand Prediction Markets Trading

Coinbase has agreed to acquire The Clearing Company, a prediction markets startup the company says is working at the frontier of regulated, on-chain markets.

The acquisition is intended to help Coinbase power and scale prediction markets on its platform and accelerate the company’s roadmap toward what it calls an “Everything Exchange,” a unified venue where customers can trade across asset classes.

Coinbase said the move builds on its recent rollout of access to prediction markets, positioning the product as a way for users to trade on the outcomes of real-world events within the same interface they use for crypto, derivatives, and equities. The company described prediction markets as covering a wide range of event categories, including elections, the economy, sports, and culture. And the company said it sees an opportunity to broaden participation in this type of trading.

Coinbase said The Clearing Company adds specialized talent in event-contract trading and market design, and that the team is led by founder Toni Gemayel, whom Coinbase described as a product and growth leader with experience shaping modern prediction markets. The company said the acquisition will help it expand this category over time as it develops its broader multi-asset vision.

Coinbase also noted that certain listed derivatives products are offered through its registered entity, while spot crypto accounts are maintained by a separate Coinbase entity that is not registered with the CFTC.
