Colorado State University received a $5 million gift from Bohemian Foundation to support energy innovation and permanently fund student programs focused on democracy and the arts. The investment is divided between CSU’s Powerhouse Energy Campus and two student prize programs that were established in 2025.
Of the total gift, $3.8 million will support the Powerhouse Energy Campus, one of CSU’s major centers for energy research, technology development, and industry collaboration.
The campus has spent more than three decades developing, testing, and scaling energy technologies while bringing together university researchers, private-sector partners, and students.
Its work is designed to move energy research beyond the laboratory and toward practical applications that can address real-world infrastructure, sustainability, and technology challenges.
The new funding will expand CSU’s capacity to pursue emerging energy opportunities and support research that can be translated into deployable technologies.
The Powerhouse Energy Campus also serves as an important experiential learning environment for students, allowing them to participate in research and development projects alongside faculty members and industry partners.
Another $1.2 million from the Bohemian Foundation gift will permanently endow the Colorado Democracy Prize and the President’s Art Prize.
Both programs were created in 2025 to provide students with opportunities to engage more deeply with civic life, democracy, creative expression, and the role universities can play in their communities.
The Colorado Democracy Prize is intended to encourage student participation in projects and ideas connected to democratic engagement and public life.
The President’s Art Prize supports students who use art and creative work to contribute to the university community and broader public conversations.
As part of the gift, the President’s Art Prize will be renamed the Amy Parsons Presidential Art Prize in recognition of CSU President Amy Parsons and her support for expanding student opportunities.
By creating permanent endowments for the two prizes, CSU will be able to continue offering the programs in future years without relying solely on annual fundraising or short-term funding.
The structure of the gift combines support for technical research with long-term investment in student civic and creative engagement.
For CSU, the Powerhouse funding strengthens an energy research platform that has operated for decades, while the endowed prizes provide continuing resources for programs launched more recently.
Bohemian Foundation’s investment is intended to give CSU additional capacity to respond to emerging energy challenges while also ensuring that students continue to have opportunities to participate in democracy, public life, and the arts.
The university views the gift as supporting multiple dimensions of its mission, including research, innovation, experiential learning, civic engagement, and creative expression.
By funding both established energy infrastructure and permanent student awards, the contribution is designed to have an impact across several generations of CSU researchers and students.
KEY QUOTES:
“This gift advances our capacity for groundbreaking energy innovation, and it also ensures that two of our most distinctive student initiatives will continue to provide generations of young people with opportunities to lead, create and contribute.”
Amy Parsons, President of Colorado State University
