Commonwealth Fusion Systems (CFS), the largest and leading private fusion company, announced that it raised $863 million in a Series B2 fundraising round. New investors in CFS include: Brevan Howard Macro Venture Fund; Counterpoint Global (Morgan Stanley); Stanley Druckenmiller; FFA Private Bank (Dubai) Ltd.; Galaxy Interactive, a venture platform within Galaxy Digital; Gigascale Capital; HOF Capital; Neva SGR (Intesa Sanpaolo Bank); NVentures (NVIDIA’s venture capital arm); Planet First Partners; Woori Venture Partners US; and others committed to the mission of commercializing fusion energy.

A consortium of 12 Japanese companies led by Mitsui & Co., Ltd. and Mitsubishi Corporation also participated. The Japanese consortium included Development Bank of Japan, Fujikura, JERA, JGC Japan, Mitsui Fudosan, Mitsui O.S.K. Lines Ltd., NTT, Sumitomo Mitsui Banking, Sumitomo Mitsui Trust Bank, and Kansai Electric Power.

They join existing CFS investors who increased their stakes, including Breakthrough Energy Ventures; Emerson Collective; Eni; Future Ventures; Gates Frontier; Google; Hostplus Superannuation Fund; Khosla Ventures; Lowercarbon Capital; Safar Partners; Eric Schmidt, former CEO of Google; Starlight Ventures; Tiger Global;  a large state pension fund and others who support CFS’ leadership in this energy transition.

CFS has completed an oversubscribed fundraising round, raising the largest amount in deep tech and energy since its $1.8 billion Series B in 2021. The funds will be used to finish SPARC, its fusion demonstration machine, and advance its first ARC power plant in Virginia. To date, CFS has raised nearly $3 billion, representing about one-third of private investment in fusion companies worldwide.

This round expanded CFS’s global reach, attracting a diverse range of investors from various sectors, including venture capitalists, private equity firms, and hedge funds. This funding highlights CFS’s leadership in developing commercial fusion power, as well as its progress in high-temperature superconducting magnets and the construction of SPARC in Devens, Massachusetts.

CFS is also working on the world’s first grid-scale fusion power plant, ARC, located in Chesterfield County, Virginia, with the goal of supplying power to the grid by the early 2030s. This project is supported by partnerships with Dominion Energy and Google, which will purchase half of the plant’s generated power.
