Constellation And Amazon Sign 20-Year Nuclear Power Agreement Supporting $3 Billion In Maryland Investment

Constellation and Amazon have signed a 20-year power agreement to support the continued operation and expansion of the Calvert Cliffs Clean Energy Center in Maryland, including about 190 megawatts of new nuclear generating capacity.

The agreement is expected to enable more than $3 billion of infrastructure investment in Maryland.

Constellation plans improvements across the 1,790-megawatt Calvert Cliffs plant, with the additional 190 megawatts of emissions-free capacity expected to come online between 2030 and 2032.

The 20-year agreement covers 690 megawatts of power, including the 190-megawatt uprate.

Constellation and Amazon also entered into a related retail supply agreement supporting Amazon operations across the 13-state PJM electricity market.

Amazon’s long-term commitment is intended to provide Constellation with additional revenue certainty as it pursues relicensing of Calvert Cliffs for another 20 years.

Constellation also plans to use the relationship as a foundation for exploring additional clean energy generation at the site, including advanced nuclear technologies.

Electricity generated by Calvert Cliffs will continue flowing into the broader PJM regional grid rather than being physically dedicated to individual Amazon facilities.

Calvert Cliffs is located in Lusby, Maryland, on the western shore of the Chesapeake Bay.

The plant generates about 80% of Maryland’s clean energy and enough electricity to power more than 1.3 million homes.

Calvert Cliffs employs more than 800 people and contributes approximately $21 million annually in taxes supporting public services.

KEY QUOTES:

“This agreement demonstrates how private investment can strengthen critical energy infrastructure. Amazon’s commitment supports the long-term operation of Calvert Cliffs for generations to come and creates a strong foundation for future investment in both the facility and in advanced nuclear technologies.”

Joe Dominguez, Chairman, President and CEO of Constellation

“Amazon is committed to investing in carbon-free energy to strengthen the grid and benefit the communities where we operate. This long-term agreement with Constellation sustains the continued operation and expansion of Maryland’s largest source of carbon-free energy, supports hundreds of jobs, and brings significant new generation to the regional grid.”
