Contentful, a content infrastructure company, has raised $33.5 million in Series D funding to expand its strategic partnerships, deepen its third-party integrations, and empower digital content practitioners. This round of funding was led by Sapphire Ventures.

Also participating in this round include OMERS Ventures, Salesforce Ventures, and existing investors OMERS Ventures, Salesforce Ventures, and existing backers including General Catalyst, Benchmark, Balderton Capital, and Hercules. Contentful has now raised a total of $78.3 million.

With Contentful, enterprises are able to transition from legacy Content Management Systems (CMS) to content infrastructure — which is being adopted by a number of Fortune 500 companies.

The problem with legacy CMS platforms is that developers are forced to use preset frameworks and workflows to deploy content in websites and apps. Contentful’s content infrastructure provides a cloud-native and API-based platform that integrates with modern technology stacks.

“Contentful plays a crucial role in helping enterprises become agile, empowering digital teams with a best-in-class technology stack. This prevents them from being disrupted so they can pursue new opportunities to disrupt the market themselves,” said Contentful CEO and co-founder Sascha Konietzke. “With this new funding, we’ll enhance our content infrastructure offerings, further improve the practitioner experience and provide a comprehensive solution for global brands and large-scale organizations.”

Contentful’s Solutions Partner Program helps digital agencies and their clients modernize their technology stacks for multi-channel content development and delivery. As a result, Contentful was recognized as a Contender in the 2018 Forrester Wave for Web Content Management Systems.

“We’re recognizing a huge shift in the way content is being created and delivered, with legacy CMSes no longer able to keep up with the demands of an agile, omni-channel world,” added Sapphire Ventures managing director Andreas Weiskam. “Content is the lifeblood of the modern consumer journey, and we believe Contentful’s approach to revolutionizing the content infrastructure will deliver significant business value for their customers.”
