Convex has raised $57 million in Series B funding to expand its backend development platform as AI coding agents produce a growing share of software. Insight Partners led the round, with participation from Etna Labs and existing investors including Andreessen Horowitz and Spark Capital. The financing brings Convex’s total funding to $110.5 million.
Convex plans to use the capital for core product development, agentic development tooling, and hiring at its San Francisco headquarters.
The company argues that AI-generated software is creating new infrastructure challenges because coding agents can generate applications rapidly while introducing subtle data and reliability problems into conventional backend systems.
In Convex’s own testing, the company said 90% of AI-built applications using a traditional database experienced silent data corruption during real-world use, while applications built on Convex recorded no failures in the same testing.
Convex is designed to make infrastructure reliability an integrated feature rather than requiring developers or AI agents to independently assemble databases, workflows, synchronization, search, storage, and other components.
Its platform includes ACID transactions, end-to-end type safety, real-time subscriptions, database functionality, server functions, workflows, search, and file storage.
Convex was founded in 2021 by former Dropbox infrastructure engineers, including CEO Jamie Turner and CTO James Cowling.
The platform now powers nearly 2 million applications built by almost 500,000 developers and records more than 1.2 million weekly npm downloads. Customers and users include teams at OpenAI, Tripadvisor, Solana, Zapier, and Reducto.
KEY QUOTES:
“Agents reach for the first thing that works, and on most backends the first thing that works is subtly, silently wrong. You’ll find out weeks later, in production. Convex is that discipline packaged as a product: the correct thing and the easy thing are the same thing.”
Jamie Turner, Co-Founder and CEO of Convex
“AI coding agents are changing how software gets built, but they can expose the weaknesses of traditional backends. Convex gives developers and agents a powerful foundation where the pieces work together and reliability is built in from the start.”
Teddie Wardi, Managing Director at Insight Partners
