Counsel Health has raised $25 million in Series A funding to launch its physician-supervised AI care platform, a new model designed to make healthcare faster, safer, and more cost-effective. The funding round was led by Andreessen Horowitz (a16z) and GV, following the company’s $11 million Seed round led by a16z in 2024.
Counsel’s platform merges artificial intelligence with direct physician oversight, positioning itself as a “responsible front door” to the healthcare system.
The platform blends the speed and immediacy of AI with the judgment of licensed physicians, providing instant, context-aware answers to health questions. When necessary, physicians step in to give diagnoses, prescriptions, or referrals, and continue to follow up until the issue is resolved.
This model aims to overcome common problems in today’s healthcare landscape, where nurse lines tend to over-escalate cases, telehealth services are slow and impersonal, and unsupervised AI chatbots raise safety and compliance concerns.
Counsel Health’s approach has demonstrated strong outcomes: a 96% issue resolution rate, an average two-minute physician response time, and annual savings of $381 per engaged member.
The company operates a physician-led medical group licensed in all 50 states, with AI systems built on clinical guidelines and patient medical records. The AI automatically escalates complex cases to doctors, ensuring a safe and compliant care pathway.
In one notable case, Counsel’s system identified and triaged a member with abdominal pain and abnormal lab results who was on the path to hospitalization for liver failure, successfully redirecting them to the appropriate care setting and preventing an unnecessary hospital stay.
With over 100,000 members currently served nationwide, Counsel plans to use the new funding to grow its physician network, enhance its AI technology, and deepen partnerships with health plans, employers, and provider groups. The company expects to reach millions of new members in the coming year.
