Crédit Agricole signed an agreement with Lone Star Funds to acquire 100% of IKB Deutsche Industriebank, expanding the French banking group’s presence in Germany and strengthening its position in the German Mittelstand market.
The transaction is part of Crédit Agricole’s ACT 2028 strategy, which identifies Germany as a priority market for European growth.
Crédit Agricole said the acquisition will provide immediate scale in German mid-corporate banking through IKB’s established client base, sector expertise, and long-standing relationships with Mittelstand companies.
The transaction builds on Crédit Agricole’s existing expansion initiatives in Germany, including its Crédit Agricole Savings European digital platform and the more recent deployment of Crédit Agricole Deutschland for German retail and private banking clients.
Crédit Agricole has operated in Germany for more than 70 years.
The group said the acquisition will also support development of a broader pan-European SME and mid-corporate banking franchise spanning France, Italy, and Germany.
In France, Crédit Agricole is a major financier of the domestic economy, while Crédit Agricole Italia serves more than 6 million clients and has developed a dedicated mid-corporate banking platform with Crédit Agricole CIB.
Founded in 1924 and headquartered in Düsseldorf, IKB has approximately 600 employees and six regional offices across Düsseldorf, Berlin, Frankfurt, Hamburg, Munich, and Stuttgart.
The bank provides loans, capital markets solutions, and advisory services to mid-sized and larger German companies.
As of December 31, 2025, IKB had €14.3 billion in total assets and an €8.2 billion loan book.
Approximately €4.4 billion of the loan portfolio was refinanced through public program loans from KfW and other development institutions.
IKB generated €2.8 billion of new business in fiscal 2025, representing a 27% increase from the previous year.
Sustainable financing accounted for approximately 32% of combined new business volume, while the bank reported a €61 million net result for fiscal 2025.
Following the transaction, IKB will gain access to Crédit Agricole’s broader European network and products across corporate and investment banking, leasing and factoring, trade finance, private banking, asset management, and insurance.
Crédit Agricole will finance the transaction entirely from its own resources.
The acquisition is expected to reduce Crédit Agricole S.A.’s CET1 ratio by approximately 20 basis points at closing.
Completion remains subject to customary conditions, including antitrust approvals, Foreign Subsidies Regulation clearance, and approval from the European Central Bank.
Closing is expected by the end of the second quarter of 2027.
