Critical Materials Group (CMG) has acquired Rocky Mountain Scientific Laboratory (RMSL), a national security research and rapid solutions laboratory serving military and law enforcement agencies. Financial terms of the transaction were not disclosed.
As part of the acquisition, RMSL CEO and Co-Founder Travis Swanson will become Chief Science Officer of Critical Materials Group. Swanson previously co-founded CMG while continuing to lead RMSL, and the transaction brings the two organizations together under a single company.
The acquisition combines RMSL’s energetics research, formulation, and testing capabilities with CMG’s production platforms, creating a more integrated path from laboratory development to manufacturing. CMG said new energetic materials can face delays when scale-up, qualification, and safety engineering are handled across separate organizations and data environments.
By pairing RMSL’s development and testing capabilities with CMG’s modular, automation-ready manufacturing, the company aims to shorten the transition from research to qualified production while adding domestic capacity alongside government-owned and prime contractor facilities.
Founded in 2025, CMG is a privately held, Texas-based manufacturing company focused on modernizing domestic energetics production facilities considered important to national security. The company develops modular, automation-ready production platforms and integrated manufacturing techniques designed to incorporate safety throughout the production process. ess Release_F…
The combination positions CMG to bring research, testing, and manufacturing capabilities under one organization, with Swanson overseeing the scientific side of the combined business as Chief Science Officer.
KEY QUOTES:
“Energetics programs lose most of their time in the handoff between the people who develop a material and the people who have to produce it at volume. Bringing RMSL into CMG puts that work in one place, with Travis leading the science and our platforms built to manufacture what his team develops.”
Kevin Capozzoli, CEO and Co-Founder of Critical Materials Group
“The time is now to invest in the development and production of energetic materials and munitions. This merger brings both sides of the problem under one roof: RMSL researches and develops the materials, while CMG manufactures them safely at scale, so a material can move from concept to qualified production faster than the current system allows.”
Travis Swanson, Chief Science Officer and Co-Founder of Critical Materials Group
