CSignum, a Scottish wireless communications technology company, has raised £2.6 million to accelerate commercial deployment of its EM2 product portfolio across water quality monitoring and other infrastructure applications. The financing will also support manufacturing expansion as the company moves from pilot projects toward larger commercial deployments.
The round includes additional backing from Archangels, PXN Ventures, Scottish Enterprise, British Business Bank, and a group of U.S.-based angel investors. It follows a £6 million investment completed in April 2025 with CSignum’s existing investor group.
Founded in 2020 and headquartered in Bathgate near Edinburgh, CSignum develops wireless communications technology capable of transmitting data through environments where conventional radio signals can be difficult or impossible to use, including water, ice, soil, rock, and concrete.
Its technology is intended to connect sensors and monitoring equipment deployed in difficult-to-reach physical environments with digital systems used to analyze infrastructure and environmental conditions.
CSignum describes this capability as an important component of bringing artificial intelligence and real-time analytics into parts of the physical world that have historically lacked reliable connectivity.
The latest capital will primarily support commercial expansion and manufacturing scale-up. Since its previous funding round, the company says it has moved from pilot programs into volume deployments with multiple UK water utilities and international customers.
One of the primary commercial drivers has been increased requirements for continuous water quality monitoring in the United Kingdom.
CSignum said utilities must monitor 25% of England’s more than 14,000 combined storm overflows during the AMP8 period through 2030, with the remaining sites expected to be addressed under AMP9 through 2035.
The company currently has deployments with several UK water utility providers, positioning its wireless technology as a way to collect data from locations where conventional communications infrastructure may be difficult or expensive to deploy.
CSignum is also pursuing applications beyond UK water utilities.
Its underlying technology uses Electromagnetic Field Signalling, which the company says can carry data through media that generally block conventional wireless communications, particularly across the boundary between air and water.
CSignum sees potential applications across utilities, maritime operations, offshore energy, environmental monitoring, and other infrastructure markets where cables can be expensive or difficult to install and maintain.
Alongside the financing, CSignum announced a leadership transition.
John Nicholls has been appointed CEO, succeeding Jonathan Reeves, who will move into the role of Chief Strategy Officer.
Nicholls brings experience in international sales growth, fundraising, mergers and acquisitions, and strategic partnerships across sectors including photonics, quantum technologies, space, semiconductors, and electric vehicle infrastructure.
His appointment comes as CSignum shifts its focus toward converting technical validation and early customer deployments into larger commercial programs.
The company is also adding employees in the UK, United States, and European Union as it scales operations.
KEY QUOTES:
“I’m excited to be joining CSignum at this pivotal moment in its journey. The team has built a differentiated technology and strong customer relationships across diverse market sectors, and my focus now is turning that potential into large-scale deployments. More broadly, CSignum exists to close the communications gap between inaccessible parts of the physical world and the digital and AI systems that increasingly depend on them. This investment lets us do exactly that, faster.”
John Nicholls, CEO Of CSignum
“CSignum continues to make strong commercial progress, and this investment reflects our continued confidence in the team and the technology, which is beginning to fulfil its potential of disrupting established markets. We’re pleased to back John’s transition into the CEO role as the business enters its next phase of growth.”
Dan McKiddie, Investment Manager At Archangels
“The physical world has always been the hardest place to get data out of, particularly anything underwater or underground. CSignum’s approach solves that without the cost and complexity of cabling, with monitoring requirements in water and other infrastructure sectors becoming more stringent. By backing businesses like CSignum, PXN is helping build critical UK infrastructure capability while supporting genuine deep tech that’s found early commercial pull.”
