CVS Health Corp (NYSE: CVS) is launching a program that would enable customers to receive their prescriptions from self-driving vehicles. To test the program, CVS has partnered with Nuro — which is a robotics and AI company that was created by former Google engineers. Houston will be the first test market for automated deliveries. This will come at no charge for the customers.

CVS customers can also add nonprescription items to the orders. CVS customers who live within select zip codes near the Bellaire suburb of Houston will see an option for autonomous deliveries.

When CVS announced its first-quarter earnings on May 6, the company said it saw a major jump in demand for telehealth services and home deliveries. Specifically, telehealth and virtual visits increased by about 600% compared to the prior year. Plus there was a 1,000% increase for the home deliveries of prescriptions.

The demand for these services had surged due to the shelter in place orders associated with the COVID-19 pandemic. And CVS CEO Larry Merlo believes that this trend will continue following the pandemic.
