Cypherpunk Technologies, a privacy technology company focused on digital asset treasury strategies anchored by Zcash, announced a $5 million investment in Zcash Open Development Lab (ZODL), marking the company’s first technology investment outside of direct holdings of ZEC.
ZODL was founded and is led by former Electric Coin Company CEO Josh Swihart. The organization houses the technology and intellectual property behind the Zashi wallet, which has been rebranded as Zodl. During Swihart’s tenure at Electric Coin Company, the wallet helped drive significant adoption of Zcash’s privacy features. Its simplified user experience contributed to the growth of the Orchard shielded pool from about 1 million ZEC to roughly 4 million ZEC during 2025.
The newly funded ZODL entity aims to make Zcash easier to use by continuing to develop the wallet and supporting protocol-level improvements. Cypherpunk said the investment aligns with its mission to advance technologies that guarantee privacy for internet users while also giving shareholders exposure to a private company building privacy infrastructure tied to the Zcash ecosystem.
Swihart, who joined Cypherpunk in December as a strategic advisor, is leading the effort to expand the Zodl wallet and related technologies. Cypherpunk currently holds 294,743.10 ZEC at an average purchase price of $335.89, representing approximately 1.78 percent of the total network supply.
The investment also includes participation from several prominent investors, including a16z, Winklevoss Capital, Coinbase, Paradigm, Chapter One, David Friedberg, and Balaji Srinivasan.
Cypherpunk said the partnership is designed to accelerate the adoption of shielded ZEC and expand the use of privacy-preserving digital money globally, while also reinforcing the strategic value of its ZEC treasury.
