Davis Polk has hired prominent tax lawyer Brian Grieve as a partner in its Tax practice in New York, strengthening a team that advises asset managers and corporations on complex transactional tax issues.
The firm said Grieve brings deep experience counseling sophisticated clients on tax considerations related to private equity and other alternative investment strategies, aligning with Davis Polk’s significant and continued growth in its investment management practice.
Grieve’s work centers on advising alternative asset managers on tax matters across the lifecycle of U.S. and non-U.S. investment vehicles, including private equity, credit, hybrid capital, special situations, real estate, and infrastructure funds. His practice also spans the tax structuring of investments made by those funds, as well as advising private equity sponsors and corporate clients on the tax aspects of complex transactions, including public and private mergers and acquisitions, strategic investments, joint ventures, and restructuring matters tied to bankruptcy and other situations.
In addition to funds and M&A-related work, Grieve has experience in financing and capital markets transactions, including structured finance and securitizations, and regularly advises on tax issues involving derivative products.
Davis Polk said Grieve joins from Paul, Weiss, where he had been a partner in the tax department since 2018. And Grieve earned his J.D. from Georgetown Law School in 2009 and his B.A. from Boston College in 2006.
