DePuy Synthes, the orthopedics division of Johnson & Johnson, has acquired Expanding Innovations, Inc., a commercial-stage medical technology company focused on expandable interbody cage systems for spine surgery. Financial terms were not disclosed. The acquisition adds a proprietary non-screw-based expandable cage technology to DePuy Synthes’ Spine portfolio, strengthening its position in the lumbar fusion market.
Expanding Innovations’ core technology is designed to address two persistent challenges in spinal fusion surgery: post-operative cage collapse and vertebral body subsidence, in which the implant sinks into the adjacent vertebrae over time. Its non-screw-based expansion mechanism is engineered to improve implant stability and procedural efficiency compared to traditional cage designs. The company’s current commercial portfolio includes the X-PAC TLIF Expandable Posterior Cage, X-PAC LLIF Expandable Lateral Cage System, and X-PAC N-GAGE Lumbar Plate System, covering Transforaminal Lumbar Interbody Fusion and Lateral Lumbar Interbody Fusion approaches. The pipeline includes next-generation TLIF and LLIF cages, enhanced instrumentation, and planned expansion into Anterior Lumbar Interbody Fusion.
Expanding Innovations’ technology will complement DePuy Synthes’ existing TriALTIS Spine System and be integrated into the VELYS digital surgery platform for Spine, broadening the combined offering available to surgeons across lumbar fusion procedures. DePuy Synthes has a 130-year history in orthopaedic innovation and operates across joint reconstruction, trauma, extremities, craniomaxillofacial, spinal surgery, and sports medicine.
