Diffraqtion has brought its total pre-seed funding above $10 million after receiving strategic investments from Lockheed Martin Ventures and Sumitomo Corporation’s Presidio Ventures, backing development of quantum-enabled cameras for defense, space and autonomous sensing applications. The MIT and University of Maryland spinout capped the round following strong investor interest. Other participants include SBI US Gateway Fund with Plug and Play, Collaborative Fund, TekVentures, Aether VC, milemark capital and ADIN. Ground State Ventures led the first close in January 2026.
Diffraqtion has made several technical and government-program advances since that initial financing.
The company completed on-sky demonstrations at a partner observatory in which its system distinguished closely spaced objects. Its DARPA Direct-to-Phase-II SBIR program has moved into a second option period, while NASA selected Diffraqtion for a Phase I SBIR focused on orbital debris tracking.
The company also won NASA’s $100,000 Space to Soil Challenge for adaptive sensing and onboard processing.
Diffraqtion’s technology is designed to extract information from the spatial shape of incoming light rather than relying primarily on its brightness.
The company says simulations indicate its approach can resolve features as much as 20 times smaller than conventional optical approaches and enable significantly faster onboard classification. Those figures are company-generated simulation results rather than demonstrated commercial performance.
The new capital will support development of Diffraqtion’s first fielded camera and preparations for flight heritage through a hosted payload aboard a partner spacecraft.
Diffraqtion has also named Peter Kazlas Head of Engineering. Kazlas brings 25 years of optics experience, including work at E Ink and QD Vision before Samsung acquired the latter company.
Potential applications extend beyond space domain awareness and reconnaissance into drones, autonomous systems and precision inspection.
