The Walt Disney Company announced it now has over 50 million paid subscribers around the world. This is up five-fold from when the service launched about five months ago. The premium streaming service was at 29 million subscribers as of February.
The coronavirus lockdown is likely one of the biggest reasons why the streaming service saw a surge in growth. The service also launched in eight other countries in Europe at the end of March. And Disney+ also arrived in India last week.
Interestingly, Disney had a goal of hitting between 60 million and 90 million subscribers by 2024 so it is nearly way ahead of schedule for the lower range of the goal.
Disney+ is priced at $6.99 per month for Disney, Pixar, Marvel, Lucasfilm, and 21st Century Fox content. And it is $12.99 for a package that includes Disney+, Hulu, and ESPN+.
“We’re truly humbled that Disney+ is resonating with millions around the globe, and believe this bodes well for our continued expansion throughout Western Europe and into Japan and all of Latin America later this year,” said Kevin Mayer, Chairman of Walt Disney Direct-to-Consumer & International.
