DLA Piper has expanded its Energy and Natural Resources M&A capabilities with the appointment of Patrick Leyden as a partner in its Johannesburg M&A team. The firm, ranked the world’s leading legal adviser by M&A deal volume for 16 consecutive years, describes the hire as part of its ongoing strategy to deepen its bench of lawyers advising on complex cross‑border transactions.

Leyden brings nearly two decades of experience advising companies and investors across the African continent. He joins from HSF Kramer, where he built a domestic, regional, and international practice focused on natural resources and energy. His work spans M&A transactions, regulatory challenges, and sector‑specific issues that shape investment across mining and energy markets.

His arrival follows a series of strategic additions to DLA Piper’s Corporate practice worldwide, including recent hires in London, Hong Kong, Washington DC, and Johannesburg. The firm says these moves reflect its commitment to strengthening its global transactional capabilities and supporting clients navigating evolving regulatory and market environments.

DLA Piper continues to lead the global M&A market, with recent mandates involving BASF SE, Battery Ventures, Agencja Rozwoju Przemysłu, POSCO Holdings, Sun Peak Metals, VDK Groep, and MidEuropa. The firm notes that Leyden’s experience in natural resources and energy will further enhance its ability to advise clients in sectors undergoing significant transformation.
