Doctours Health has raised a $2 million pre-seed round to expand its patient-directed healthcare platform, which helps Americans compare, book and coordinate medical care in the U.S. and abroad. Draper Associates and Jason Calacanis’ LAUNCH led the financing, with participation from Halogen Ventures, StoryHouse Ventures, and HMC INQ.
The San Francisco-based company is seeking to make medical tourism easier to navigate by providing upfront pricing, clinic vetting, U.S.-based patient coordination, financing assistance, travel support and follow-up care within a single platform.
Doctours is initially focusing on hair restoration, a planned-care category where the company sees significant price differences between U.S. providers and international clinics, along with strong consumer interest and established social proof.
Patients using Doctours work with U.S.-based coordinators and AI-assisted messaging to evaluate clinics, secure an all-inclusive price, arrange travel and financing and coordinate aftercare once they return home.
Published packages available through the platform currently range from $2,200 to $8,690.
Doctours said every clinic joining its network is personally visited and undergoes credential checks before being accepted.
Five of its partner clinics in Istanbul also hold International Health Tourism Authorization from Turkey’s Ministry of Health.
The platform is free for patients, with participating clinics paying Doctours for its coordination services.
The company is building its model around what it calls “patient-directed healthcare,” where individuals function more directly as healthcare buyers by seeing prices upfront and choosing clinicians based on factors including cost, qualifications and location.
Doctours sees international care as one potential response to rising U.S. healthcare costs.
The company said prices for some procedures abroad can be 50% to 80% lower than comparable U.S. prices, potentially giving patients another option beyond using insurance or paying domestic cash prices.
Its longer-term vision involves encouraging consumers to compare three figures before choosing planned medical care: their expected out-of-pocket insurance cost, the domestic cash price and the cash price available abroad.
Doctours believes increased transparency around those choices could encourage more consumers to shop for non-emergency healthcare in a manner closer to how they evaluate other major purchases.
The opportunity is particularly relevant to medical tourism, where millions of U.S. residents travel internationally for medical care each year, according to the company’s announcement citing the CDC.
Doctours argues that many patients still coordinate those procedures through forums, social media and direct communications with clinics, environments where pricing transparency, credential verification and U.S.-based patient support can be limited.
The new financing will support further development of Doctours’ AI-native patient coordination platform and expansion of its vetted clinic network.
The company also plans to move beyond hair restoration into additional planned-care categories, including fertility.
Doctours is headquartered in San Francisco and is backed by Draper Associates, LAUNCH, Halogen Ventures, StoryHouse Ventures and HMC INQ.
KEY QUOTES:
“More than 100 million people in America have medical debt. For many of them, even with insurance, it came down to two options: forgo the care they needed or take on medical debt. My family was in that position when we discovered a third option: medical tourism. That is what Doctours wants to make normal. Patients should see a real cash price at home, a real price abroad, and choose with a U.S. team behind them.”
Girum Tihtina, CEO of Doctours
“Healthcare is one of the last places where Americans can’t shop, and that is why it costs so much. Excellent care is available all over the world, often at a fraction of the price. Doctours builds the trust that lets Americans go get it, and when patients can compare across borders, everyone has to compete.”
