Dropbox is preparing to integrate its Dash AI capabilities more deeply into its core platform as the company returns to paying-user growth and looks to bring AI-powered intelligence to an installed base of more than 18 million paying customers.
Dropbox added 96,000 paying users sequentially during the second quarter, marking its third consecutive quarter of paying-user growth. The company ended the period with 18.19 million paying users compared with 18.13 million a year earlier.
Management said the next phase of Dropbox’s product strategy will involve bringing Dash intelligence directly into the Dropbox experience. The approach gives Dropbox an opportunity to distribute AI capabilities through an established platform that already serves more than 18 million paying customers rather than relying solely on a standalone AI product.
The renewed subscriber momentum comes alongside a modest return to underlying revenue growth. Total second-quarter revenue increased 0.9% to $631.5 million. Excluding FormSwift, revenue increased 1.7% year-over-year.
Annual recurring revenue reached $2.566 billion, up 1%. Excluding FormSwift, ARR increased 1.7%. On a constant-currency basis, ARR increased $6.2 million sequentially, or $11 million when FormSwift is excluded. Average revenue per paying user increased to $139.68 from $138.32.
Dropbox also continues to generate substantial cash flow despite its relatively slow top-line growth. Net cash from operating activities totaled $238.5 million, while unlevered free cash flow reached $283.5 million compared with $276.4 million a year earlier. The company ended the period with $1.114 billion in cash, cash equivalents and short-term investments.
Profitability remained significant. Dropbox’s GAAP operating margin was 26.1%, while non-GAAP operating margin reached 39.7%. GAAP net income was $95.8 million and non-GAAP net income was $170 million.
The combination of renewed paying-user growth and the planned integration of Dash creates a potentially important strategic opportunity for Dropbox. Rather than positioning AI as separate from its long-established storage and collaboration platform, the company is seeking to embed AI intelligence into a product already used by millions of paying customers.
KEY QUOTES:
“Q2 reinforced that our return to growth in the core business is not a one-quarter event.”
“We continued to see positive year-over-year revenue growth excluding FormSwift, added 96,000 paying users for our third consecutive quarter of paying user growth, exceeded our guidance on non-GAAP operating margin at over 39%, and generated $283.5 million of unlevered free cash flow.”
“I’m excited for what’s ahead as we bring Dash intelligence directly into a smarter Dropbox that our customers already trust, and use the infrastructure we’ve built over nearly two decades to extend that value for the more than 18 million paying customers already on Dropbox today.”
