Duolingo has acquired Animade, a London-based animation and motion design studio, to expand its in-house creative capabilities as it invests in more engaging product and learning experiences. Financial terms of the transaction were not disclosed.
Animade will join Duolingo’s Design Studio, increasing the company’s capacity across motion design, character animation, interactive experiences, product storytelling, Growth experiments, and other creative initiatives.
The acquisition reflects the growing importance of motion design within Duolingo’s product strategy. The company increasingly uses animation and visual interactions not only for branding but also to help learners understand features, remain engaged with lessons, and return to the platform.
Animade was founded in London and has developed an international reputation for creating expressive motion systems, interactive experiences, and product storytelling for technology companies and other brands.
The studio has operated since 2010 and focuses on character-driven animation, design, and digital experiences. Duolingo believes bringing Animade’s team directly into the company will provide additional creative resources that can be applied across both existing products and future initiatives.
The deal also expands Duolingo’s creative presence in the United Kingdom and represents another investment in specialized design talent as the company continues scaling its global learning platform.
Duolingo sees design and animation as increasingly important differentiators as artificial intelligence makes software development faster and lowers some of the technical barriers to building digital products.
While AI can accelerate areas of product development, the company believes distinctive human creativity, design judgment, personality, and emotional connection will remain important in determining how users experience and engage with software.
That approach is particularly relevant to Duolingo, which has built much of its consumer identity around colorful characters, humor, animation, and game-like interactions intended to make learning feel more approachable.
Integrating Animade into the Design Studio could allow Duolingo to develop new animation systems and interactive experiences more quickly while applying a more consistent creative approach across product development, marketing, and experimentation.
The additional design capacity is also expected to support Duolingo’s Growth organization, where product experiments can require rapid development of new visual concepts and user experiences.
Duolingo operates one of the world’s largest mobile learning platforms. Its flagship language-learning application has become the top-grossing Education category app on both Google Play and Apple’s App Store.
The company has continued expanding its use of technology to make learning more engaging and effective while maintaining its broader goal of developing accessible educational products.
For Animade, joining Duolingo provides an opportunity to apply its animation and design capabilities directly within a large consumer technology product rather than primarily working as an external creative studio.
The companies also share an emphasis on using character, personality, and thoughtful visual details to make digital products feel more engaging and human.
