Dynamic Creatures has emerged from stealth with a new platform focused on mobile, interactive character robots for entertainment and hospitality environments, launching with an official partnership with Boston Dynamics and an engagement with a major theme park and retailer.
The Boston-based company is developing robots designed to move naturally through guest environments, understand the context of interactions and respond to individuals in real time.
Dynamic Creatures is Boston Dynamics’ official entertainment and hospitality partner and is already working with a large theme park and retailer to develop guest-facing character experiences.
The company was co-founded by CEO Marc Theermann, former Chief Strategy Officer at Boston Dynamics and a former senior leader at Google, and Chief Technology Officer Farbod Farshidian, a robotics researcher and former research leader at the Robotics and AI Institute.
At Boston Dynamics, Theermann helped transform the robotics research organization into a commercial business and developed infrastructure to deploy and support advanced robotics systems at scale.
Farshidian’s research has focused on learning-based robotic control, including work involving agile humanoid behavior for Boston Dynamics’ Atlas robot, high-speed quadrupedal locomotion and transferring complex skills developed in simulation into physical robotic systems.
Dynamic Creatures is positioning its technology between traditional stationary animatronics and task-oriented service robots.
While many hospitality robots focus on functional applications such as information, navigation or telepresence, Dynamic Creatures is developing mobile characters specifically for face-to-face engagement.
The company’s systems are designed to react to individual guests rather than simply execute predetermined performances for a broader audience.
Dynamic Creatures can develop character experiences on top of Boston Dynamics and other existing robotic platforms, while also building fully original robots around a customer’s brand, environment, story and creative requirements.
The company is also launching SnowJay, an integrated AI and robotics platform that serves as the operating system for its interactive characters.
SnowJay combines advanced robotics, learning-based control, real-time perception, behavioral programming, character design and costuming into a unified system.
The platform is designed to allow robotic characters to navigate demanding commercial environments while modifying their behavior according to the people, activity and context around them.
By developing some experiences on existing robotic platforms, Dynamic Creatures said it can potentially deploy new characters within months, reducing the development timelines traditionally associated with custom robotic character projects.
The company also plans to offer leasing models for platform-based characters, providing operators with an alternative to making substantial upfront capital investments.
Dynamic Creatures has secured backing from a group of U.S. and European institutional investors including Eniac Ventures, Kindred Ventures, Heliad, Sunshine Lake and BlueGrass Ventures.
Strategic angel investors include Marc Raibert and Lukas Ziegler.
The amount of financing was not disclosed.
From its new Boston headquarters, Dynamic Creatures is initially targeting theme parks, location-based entertainment venues, hotels, resorts, casinos, museums, cultural institutions, cruise ships and live venues.
Potential future markets include luxury retail and automotive brand experience centers.
Applications could include roaming entertainment, interactive brand ambassadors, concierge guidance and personalized visitor experiences.
The company’s broader goal is to bring advanced robotic movement and adaptive artificial intelligence into physical guest experiences while maintaining the personality and storytelling traditionally associated with entertainment characters.
KEY QUOTES:
“At Boston Dynamics, I saw what becomes possible when advanced robotics moves from breakthrough research to reliable commercial systems. We founded Dynamic Creatures to bring that capability into guest-facing environments. Our characters do more than perform for a crowd. They can respond to an individual and create small moments of wonder that people remember.”
Marc Theermann, Co-Founder and CEO of Dynamic Creatures
“Robust and fluid movement, perception and behavior have to work as one system for a character to engage naturally in the physical world. SnowJay brings those capabilities together, combining reliable robotic platforms with adaptive intelligence so each character can understand its surroundings and respond in a way that fits the person, place and moment.”
Farbod Farshidian, Co-Founder and Chief Technology Officer of Dynamic Creatures
“Dynamic Creatures is opening an important new frontier for advanced robotics. As our official entertainment and hospitality partner, the company is combining proven robotic platforms with character design, adaptive behavior and real-time interaction to create experiences the market has not had access to before. Marc and Farbod bring the rare combination of commercial and technical expertise required to turn that vision into compelling, guest-facing systems.”
Amanda McMaster, Interim CEO of Boston Dynamics
