EdgeBeam Wireless announced it has acquired the Broadspan distribution platform from Sinclair, including its software suite and core engineering team, in a move designed to accelerate the rollout of its nationwide data delivery network leveraging ATSC 3.0 broadcast infrastructure. Financial terms of the transaction were not disclosed.
The acquisition significantly advances EdgeBeam’s go-to-market timeline by several quarters while strengthening its position as a Hybrid Network Operator, a model that combines broadcast spectrum efficiency with traditional internet service provider coverage. By integrating Broadspan’s technology, EdgeBeam gains a centralized control layer for routing, managing, and distributing data across a national-scale network.
EdgeBeam’s platform is designed to address last-mile congestion by using broadcast infrastructure to deliver data in a one-to-many format. This multicast approach allows a single transmission to reach unlimited endpoints simultaneously, bypassing cellular bottlenecks and reducing the costs of one-to-one data delivery.
The company plans to leverage existing high-power television broadcast towers to build a scalable data distribution network capable of supporting enterprise applications, including software updates, digital signage, automotive services, and public safety systems. The Broadspan platform also enhances operational capabilities by providing real-time visibility and streamlined processes for distributing large data files over-the-air.
As part of the transaction, Broadspan’s engineering team will join EdgeBeam, effectively doubling its technical workforce and strengthening its ability to scale services nationwide. The combined platform is expected to enable more efficient, cost-effective data delivery, potentially significantly reducing distribution costs across industries.
The deal reflects a broader shift toward utilizing broadcast infrastructure for data delivery, positioning EdgeBeam to play a key role in the evolution of next-generation wireless networks and ATSC 3.0-enabled services.
