Elmet Technologies Awarded $36 Million DLA Contract For Molybdenum And Tungsten Materials

Elmet Technologies has been awarded an approximately $36 million Defense Logistics Agency contract to supply high-performance molybdenum and tungsten alloys and precision wire to the U.S. National Defense Stockpile.

The materials are used in jet engine components and other demanding aerospace applications.

The award is separate from the $2 billion DLA tungsten stockpile IDIQ contract Elmet announced in September.

Under the latest contract, Elmet will supply DLA Strategic Materials with titanium-zirconium-molybdenum alloy billets, bar stock and ingots, along with specialized molybdenum and tungsten wire.

The titanium-zirconium-molybdenum alloy, known as TZM, is strengthened with small additions of titanium and zirconium and is designed to maintain strength at temperatures exceeding the capabilities of many conventional metals.

The material is used in aerospace and defense applications requiring performance under extreme heat and mechanical stress.

The contract also incorporates Elmet’s capabilities in precision refractory metal wire, high-strength TZM billets, refractory alloy bar and arc-cast alloy ingots.

Elmet manufactures tungsten and molybdenum products across a vertically integrated process spanning powder, mill products and finished components.

The new award follows a series of investments aimed at strengthening the company’s domestic tungsten supply chain.

On September 14, The Elmet Group announced a $450 million committed investment from the U.S. Department of War.

At the same time, Elmet Technologies announced the $2 billion-ceiling DLA IDIQ contract supporting reconstruction of the National Defense Stockpile.

That earlier contract includes a guaranteed funded commitment of $150 million and covers tungsten concentrates and sodium tungstate.

The company is seeking to connect upstream mining, offtake and refining relationships with U.S. manufacturing of higher-value finished refractory products.

Elmet Technologies employs nearly 400 people across three facilities totaling more than 500,000 square feet in Maine, Ohio and Michigan.

KEY QUOTES:

“This award reflects the depth of Elmet Technologies’ capabilities in molybdenum and tungsten, from specialty alloy billets and bar to precision ultra-fine wire with advanced properties. Refractory metals are foundational to aerospace manufacturing and the production of jet engine components. As a vertically integrated U.S. manufacturer, we believe this contract further demonstrates our role as a trusted domestic source of critical materials and precision-engineered components.”
